How do tuners work?
Do you guys just plug them in and leave them, Or once a truck is programmed its programmed?
Can one use 1 tuner on more than one vehicle if the there the same vehicle?
And What is a good tuner that will allow me to change the shift point on my 05 ram?

you unplug it when your done programming it
i think all of them have vin locks so it can only be used on one vehicle unless you set that back to factory then you can use it on another one
and i dont know about a good one

Once you program your truck, the tuner is locked to your truck so you will not be able to use it on another vehicle until you return your truck to stock.
This is info about programmers for a Hemi, don't know if it is true for all 4.7's. Good programmers for your 05 would be diablo and superchips. The better choice would be determined by what you plan on doing with your truck in the future. Personally, I feel like if you are leaving your truck stock or only doing bolt on mods then you should probably get a superchips. It works well on stock or lightly modded trucks and you can usually get them pretty cheap on the for sale boards of this and other forums. If you are planning on doing mods to the internals of your engine like a cam then you should go for a diablo. Its a little more expensive than the SC but offers you more options. You can get custom tunes done for your truck with the diablo. If you really want to step up to some great tunes you could go for a SCT, they are very good for highly modded trucks. When I do a cam down the road, I am going to go for the SCT just bc at the moment they have the best custom tunes for our trucks.
I have a hemi. I will never do anything that can't be reversed to keep the powertrain warranty. I already have a CAI, Plan on upgrading that to a functional Ram air eventually. Replace the exhaust completely, Headers all the way back, Maybe a TB kit. I will probably never go above 87 octane.
Being able to modify the shift points is important to me.
One of the things I like about the idea of the tuner is also being able to read the codes, But I realize this can be done for free also.

from the get-go, you should probably run 89 octane it. it runs smoother, and on mine which is an 04, it calls for it from Dodge. that alone will make the truck run smoother and last longer. I got the hyptertech programmer because it was cheap used, but i would not recommend it. it doesnt have half the options that the SC and Diablo seem to.
judging from what you plan to do..the superchips (3815) will more then suffice.. it does a ton of other stuff besides code reading and canned tunes..I used it daily to monitor my fuel trims and knock retard and timing...I also used a psc1 piggyback along with it to fine tune the fuel trims...the fastest na hemi qc (stockblock) runs a ds predator with custom tuning..o...that would be me...I almost did the sct but ds released the predator which had more functionality...

Will the 3815 allow me to change the shiftpoints,
This thing has a bad habit of shifting from 1st to 2nd between 3500 and 3800 rpms on WOT and it is driving me crazy. I don't step on it often, But when I do, It disapoints my wife when it shifts to early.

Yes, WOT shift points are adjustable with the Superchips...
