Question Help? - Tires/wheels vs MPG

This forum has provided me a lot of great info over the past couple of years. So, I am hoping that I can ask for some specific info now.

I have a 2006 Hemi Ram 1500 4X4 RCLB. I am currently running Ultra 18X8.5 wheels with Toyo 33X12.50/18 M/T's. I am actually attempting to trade these out for a set of stock wheels and tires; 20" preferred to maintain the 33" tire height.

So here is my question: How much of a variance in mileage did those of you who changed from either a stock 17" or stock 20" tire/wheel set-up to 33" or taller aggressive, A/T or M/T, tread tire see?

My primary motivator for the tire wheel change is mpg improvement. If there is little to no improvement, then it isn't worth the financial loss. If it is noticeable; say an average of 2, or more, mpg gain then it may be worth the immediate loss.

No, I didn't purchase my truck from solely a mileage perspective, but I can't see any fault in achieving the most I can while still keeping the truck within my preferred operational parameters.

To all of you who respond - thanks in advance for your knowledge and experience!

I don't get it, Don't the stock 20's have 33's on them? So you went to a 17 with a 33 which would be lighter and lost mileage? Was it a A/T or a M/T?

The stock 20's are 33" tall. I think the stock 17's are 31.5" tall. The 20's are a little heavier and therefore mileage should be slightly lower. I had an 03 model with a hemi and 17's and now I have an 08 with stock 20's and it gets maybe 1 mpg less than my 03 with 17's. Just my experience. BTW both trucks are 4x4 QC.

in this case, switching to 20's doesnt sound like it would be worth it. if overall diameter is staying the same, you should be better off with the 18's I would think.

I believe the biggest issue would be tread type b/c if it is an aggressive type then your mpg will be less vs. a more street oriented type witch would increase mpg
