Dept. of Redundancy Dept. - '08 Ram Push Button Start
OK, before 97 people chime in about how wonderful the search function is, I have a couple of specific questions about the possibility of adding this feature to my truck. Some of these questions may seem trivial, but there's a reason for them.
1. Having an '08, I know that it has some kind of anti-theft feature related to the key (RFID?) Will this interfere with doing the install?
2. '08's have the TIP start feature (at least mine does...). Again, will this create a problem?
3. I have not gotten a chance to see the specific interior differences in the '06-'08 Rams vs. previous 3rd gen Rams. Was there an SRT-10 Ram with basically the same interior as mine, or were they all of the previous style? Basically, I'm wondering if there was a factory provision for a push button start with my interior style?
4. Going with the information from question #1, if, indeed, the stock key contains an RFID tag, could I use this system to pretty much make the ignition keyless? Basically, could I make it so I just needed the key on my person to allow it to start? I'm aware of the steering wheel lock, and could easily disable that.
5. I know Vipers, Ram SRT-10s, and some Challengers all use this feature. Does anyone know if the ignition cylinder from these vehicles does NOT have the momentary start position in them? As in, is the 'Run' position the last one available as the key turns, or do these vehicles just have the same ignition cylinder, and the spring loaded momentary position just does nothing?
6. If there was a stock provision for the push button start feature using my interior, where could I get the original trim piece, and how much is it going to cost?
Any information and pics would be great. I did check out a bunch of threads here on the subject, but only in a few could I actually see the pics.

3. 06-08 interiors basically the same, 06 last year of SRT10 ram
4. no
5. only 09 challengers use the keyless ignition...09 vipers may be this way, but when i was at chrysler no 09 vipers had this option
6. try looking around on ebay for a center bezel for 06 SRT10...or try www.dodgeparts.com

Don't look around for a 2006 SRT-10 factory bezel. You have a 4x4. On those years, they moved the push start into where the 4x4 switch goes rather than the cigarette lighter.

There is a picture of their center with the start. So that's not going to work for you to put it there, have to go to another location.
As far as the other things, I'm not quite sure about them.

What do you do with the key? Still stick it in the ignition and turn it to the acc to unlock the steering column and provide the key chip to the reader and THEN push the start button? Seems pointless to me.
All of the newer cars that have that feature allow you to push the start button without pulling the keys out of your pocket. That's worth it, but it's pointless if you still need to insert the key in the ignition. How do you plan to get around this feature? Thanks

I could do it. You have to remove the locking feature in your column; well pretty much remove the whole key assembly, but you are left with a big hole. The switch is going to have a contact that remains on when pushed in for the power and ignition and a momentary switch for the starter. Or is their a separate sensor that shuts power off to the starter motor after it senses that the engine has started? I have not messed with one but I know I could figure it out so all you would have to do is have your keys in your pocket and push the button and go. I have been brain storming about this myself...
