Default 03 2500 HD Fuel Gauge Issue

Just picked up an 03 2500 and on the way home had an issue with the fuel gauge. At the last 1/4 tank is fluttered, the light came on and then rested on the pin for empty. The check engine light also came on.

I had the code read at the local auto store and was a voltage code for it. The guy reset/cleared it and had no issues, until today. Right about the same area of the last 1/4 tank it fluttered & rested on the pin for empty, but this time no code or check engine.

Not sure what this could be...

I tried a quick search and looks like it might possibly be either a:
a) grounding issue for the tank or fuel level sender
b) or issue with the gauge panel wires

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance,
Chris

If it's happening at the same place, the sending unit itself could be bad. A bad ground or bad wiring probably wouldn't show the same symptom at the same time, although the gauge itself could be bad.

Have you tried filling up both at the 1/4 mark and when it flutters to see how much gas is actually left?

yes this is verry true i was also thinking sending unit and rulling out the possibal wire short
but also it would be wise just to take a gander at all the grounds and conections. but if it happens at the same 1/4 tank everytime ist gotta be a sending unit deal. it is a 03 how many miles on it?

You just got it? Private sale or dealer? Is there any sort of warranty on it?

Yea it does it at the same 1/4 both times, so starting to think its the sending unit or wire connection to sending unit.

It has 60K on the clock. Yep I did manage to talk them down on price for the Extended Warranty for it, so it will be covered under that.

Thanks guys for the info & help so far.
