Default Oil Filter

I have an 08 Ram, with a 4.7L engine. I am using a Pennzoil oil filter, at this time. The local dealership indicated that I am only to use Mopar oil filters, as they have some sort of built-in relief valve. The dealership also stated, that by using any other brand, may void my engine warranty.

What are your thoughts on that issue? And, are Pennzoil oil filters good
enough to use?

Kevin

whoa...what dealer told you that? let me guess, Towbin? I've never heard of that, but I also don't have a 4.7. Call United dodge on Ann/95 , they are pretty straight when it comes to service and stuff, maybe they can clear it up. doesnt sound right to me, any filter that is the correct size should be fine.

The dealer is giving you a load of bulls**t. All filters have a "relief valve" which is really a spring with a valve that allows extra flow during certain conditions. You don't need to use Mopar filters to keep your warranty either. Read up on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. They can't void your warranty for using aftermarket parts.

I've never used Penzzoil filters, but they are probably fine. I personally used a Mobil 1 filter last time, and will probably stick with them or the K&N.

True, as a matter of fact Mopar doesn't even manufacture their own filters, they are contracted through several companies which include Fram (always tested as the WORST oil filters on the planet!) and Purolator.
In order for them to deny you a warranty claim, under federal law, they must be able to show that a failure of the aftermarket part caused the failure for which you seek warranty service.
If your Pennzoil filter did not fail, causing the problem directly, they cannot deny you warrantly service...

I have never heard of anyone ever getting a warranty denied because of the brand of oil filter they were using. If I was you I would steer clear of that dealership from now on.

Typical dealer horse-hockey. Make 'em show you any documentation requiring use of Mopar filters. I used Pennzoil filters with no issues for many years. I've never had a Fram fail either. Currently I have about a three-year supply of K&N.

As stated, that's total BS. If you want a decent, inexpensive filter, use Purolators.
