Is this tire toasted?

Two words: Lowest bidder. They undercut everyone else by providing crappy tires at the lowest cost to the car companies. They stay in business from volume of tires sold to the car companies and people who don't know there are better tires out there so replace them with the same model they had on there from the factory. Also, Good Year makes other decent products, it's just their tires that suck. Same for Firestone: Their rubber roofing products are used everywhere. It's odd that they can't seem to get their butts in gear at the tire factories.

I had an old F-150 about ten years ago that was on Goodyears. I was pulling onto the HOV lanes on I-95 outside DC, and the tread whipped right off my front passenger tire. It shredded my wheel well liner, dented my fender, and then flew away. I never did find it.
Luckily, I was able to pull it over onto the shoulder before it actually blew. Surprisingly, you can drive another 100 feet or so without tread before the thing explodes. It blew right as I came to a stop.
I had to change the tire right there at the end of the entrance ramp of the HOVs with cars zooming by at like 85 mph. I actually made my girlfriend get out and stand on the other side of the guard rail. She was fairly certain I was going to be run over and killed. That was a fun day. Thanks Goodyear!
