The $50 Dollar Muffler Question
Well some of the v8 guys have been doing it so I figured I would. I want to just put a muffler on my truck as I can't see spending $250-$600 bucks for a exhaust. But besides the diameter, can I just use any muffler? And I want it to sound throaty not ricey. Magnaflow has a muffler in a kit, but not in the universal section and it sounds awesome. Has anyone done this before, any advice would be appreciated.

i just put a flowmaster muffler with tundowns for around $140 installed. its a single in dual out. the pipe in is either 3" or maybe 2.5" im not sure. you could just put a single in single out muffler to go with your factory pipes. it should shound good. magnaflow or flowmaster 50 series are probably your best bet

Yeah I don't want flowmaster as some people have pointed out on here that it creates more back pressure for sound and can actually hurt performance. Yeah I like magnaflow, but I'm also looking at thrush as well. I'm wanting that and the y-pipe off moes for $23 as well while keeping the factory pipes. Wow you got a deal, for the same setup you have would cost me 250 here. Yeah but thanks for the advice.

I knew about the flowmaster 40 because of derricksmash. But Derrick you actually felt a performance gain interesting as some people say they that flowmaster hurts performance.
You would need to weld the y-pipe in.
Just go to the 3gen forums as a couple of guys have done this.
chambers I'm thinking new muffler and y pipe would be a decent performance bump for relatively low cost. I haven't ever done any exhaust work and wonder if the y pipe needs to be welded or can just be clamped on like the muffler. If you could do those both yourself it would save some money.
johnambler41577 I've been thinking about swapping out my factory muffler with a Flowmaster 40 series myself - using the stock pipe (single in, single out). Anyone else done the same?
