Night-Shades legal?
is blacking out your tail lights using VHT night-shades illegal? Online it says for off-road use but is that everywhere or only in certain areas. I live in oregon and am not sure what the law is but would anyone cop care enough to pull me over?
The law doesn't require your tail light "lenses" to be clearly visable, just your tail lights. As long as the light is red when the brake, tail or turn signal lights are on then its all good.
I still plan upon getting a Line of Fire light bar on my truck when I tint the tails, but if you've ever seen the old 96-99 Chevy and GMC taillights, most of them have gotten so grimed up or bad that you can't see the lights hardly, much as with all of the old covers made of plastic, and in the '80s and before, so you should be fine.
There's an amazing thing called Google

So the main criteria is that you need to be able to see the brake lights from 500 ft away during normal daylight.
But if you read into 816.010 it sort of becomes a judgment call.
Bottom line is that it gives a police officer an excuse to pull you over even if they're deemed legal. If he thinks they may dim your lights too much he has the right to pull you over to inspect them. I had taillight covers on a former car in CA and I drove it for 4 years like that and only got pulled over once. But then again they used to be really lenient about all of that back then.
