I am planning on replacing the 5.9L (360) in my 2002 ram. I plan on replacing it with a 5.7L HEMI out of a 2008. I'm wondering if I will have to have the 08 wiring harness modified to fit on my 02?

save yourself the hassle and pain....sell your truck and buy a new one.....honestly, it's gonna be more of a PIA to swap then it will to just get a new truck

It'd be a whole lot better just to sell and buys a newer truck that has a 5.7

This is going to be very complicated for you. Car Craft just did an article bout swapping a Hemi into a muscle car. Granted, it was a muscle car, but they said it would be an expensive pain in the a**.

A 2008 also has MDS and will need the PCM and all sensors as well as the harness. You will need to have the PCM reflashed on top of one hundred other things. Then there is that whole transmission issue.

I would keep the truck and go for a 408 stroker or something.

Is there a reason that you would want to keep the 02 and do the swap over just buying a newer truck that already has a hemi?

I have to agree. From everything I've heard from other sources, it sounds like the best bet, at today's prices, is to sell and buy a newer truck.

The transmission has gone out in my 02 the daggum thing is gonna cost me about $2,000 I can get the Hemi+tranny+wiring harness+pcm for about $1,000 dollars more than the tranny alone. I wanna keep my 02 because it is paid for. It has high mileage and I dont wanna get back into monthly payments.

Back in the day it would be possible for a mortal man to complete the project. Get the proper motor (transmission) mounts, size the radiator properly, match the linkage and fuel pressure to the carb and your off in a weekend. While you have the motor, trans, pcm and wiring harness that will make that part manageable, the trucks computor systems may still not communicate to each other. I'm pretty sure that dash will be be an issue and most likely other systems. Here in Jersey, we have bi-annual inspection where the state's computer is connected to the ob2 port. I cannot even guess what it would like to get it certified, that could be very expensive. Best of luck what ever way you go.

Honestly, you should go for it. It's completely understandable on everything, and it'll probably be cheaper than selling your truck to buy a new one. Insurance will probably go up. Not to mention that a truck that old, or of the earliest year model of this bodystyle, you won't get much for it without a tranny in it. Just a few thousand, as whoever buys it will have to reinvest quite a bit to put a new tranny in.
All of the wiring with the engine, I'd get that in your '02. The PCM, harenesses, and all that good stuff that you're getting should be enough to get it good.
As far as what Wanderer is talking about, you shouldn't need to worry about that. As was talked about a while ago, the engine swap is 100% legal, and the law should give you no trouble. Because someone said that you can swap in an engine that is put in that particular vehicle in the future. Also, so long as you have everything hooked up right, the vehicle should run like it did in the '08.
It has been talked about on here before, you aren't the first to do it. You can search for the thread and maybe get in contact with whoever has done that before.
