What differential parts do I need to salvage?
Hello all,
170,000 km and the diff finally started to get loud.
I figured it had been blown up before I got the truck but I suppose not... My situation is I had a very faint deep sound when I accelerated. When I oppened up the diff on Friday I found one and a half retainers on the magnet and the oil was completely grey with metal. Luckily the gears look good.
What do I need to save to put in another LSD? The axle shafts, the ring, and the pinion? Can the rear axle housing get damaged? I want to pull this thing apart and measure everything that I need to save before ordering parts. What do the tabs bolted to the centres of the bearing caps do?
Thank you, Steve

Sounds like the retaining clips finally broke. The fluid being gray is normal. Running with the clips out is prob your best bet. Just remove all the pieces to make 2 full one's. There may be a piece or two in the axle shaft housings?? Make sure you remove all the pieces. You can get replacement one's. They are commonly reffered to as the C-clips, but that name is technically incorrect.
