Default Egr valve podition sensor p0404 p0406

I would like someone to clear somthing up if possible. I have searched on the Egr valve topics and want to know if the EGR valve and EGR sensor are one in the same. I know the EGR valve is located on the passeneger side head on my 2005 5.7, I also believe it is a sensor as well, not sensing NOx like a O2 sensor senses emmisions, but sensing the valves position and relaying that info back to the computer letting it know - yes the valve is at the position it is supposed to be. If the the valve isn't where it's supposed to be it may give you a code p0406 EGR position sensor voltage too high. Or p0404 failed EGR position sensor. Or both codes like I got.

I also found this to help people out. It says 2004, but I believ its the same.

So I've got an 04, and the P0404 code after unhooking the battery last week, it's running a little bad and smells like exhaust more than normal.

I just bought the EGR from the dealer, 70 bucks, but seeing the post above, do I need them to flash it as well? What has been your experience in taking it to the dealer to get the software updated....price wise? Any cons to not doing the update?

I replaced my EGR valve and reset the computer by removing the #23 fuse turning the key to the on position(don't start it) then waited 5 secs for the chimes (don't confuse them with the first set of chimes) and turned key off and put the fuse back in. The computer needs to relearn/adjust fuel/timing which should take a few heat cycles. The engine light is off now the engine runs much smoother at part throttle low loads and doesn't stall anymore at lights. My local autoparts store said it only costs $36.00 for the EGR, but NOBODY had it in stock. I also bought it from dealership. I paid $62.50 here in CT. I wonder if the ones they are selling will last any longer than the original.

As far as reflashing the computer I don't know what that is all about, but its possible that Dodge has refined the tune/shift points/ect and does this now?
