Question which rear do I have?

I opened up my rear diff to change the gear oil and inspect the retaining clips.......ummm I don't think I have a LSD. Can anyone tell me if this is a LSD rear please. I bought 75-140 weight Royal Purple oil, I hope it is the right oil too.

From the picture it looks like the 9.25. It also looks like the limited slip diff. I hope you did a good inspection when you had the cover off. Never know when one of the "C-clips" will break off.

Every pic of a LSD on this site I could find looks different than my rear end. There are no pockets where the w-clips would be. At any rate, truck is still sitting here with the plate off until I can figure out whats what. I hope someone can shed some light on this soon, I need to take my truck to Wal-Mart soon, LOL.

For the record, I didn't find any "pieces" of metal laying in the diff but there was a good amount of silverish looking sludge stuck to the magnet. The diff oil also had a glittery metal shaving look, but no peices at all laying anywhere. Truck has 48K miles, first diff oil change of the trucks life.

That's an open diff if I've ever seen one. No LSD for you.

If it's still on jack stands, spin one tire....if the other one turns the same way, LSD, if it spins opposite, open.

It spins the opposite way. What is the disadvantage or advantage of an open? So no worries about a grenading rear diff for me correct?

You are good as far as your oil goes whether you have LSD or not.

I don't like the sound of "the glittery metal shavings" in the oil????????
Something is cutting into the gears/diff?
However, it could just be normal wear and tear of the gears if the diff oil hasn't ever been changed for the 48K mentioned?
It should be changed every 15K.
From what I can see, I agree with Hoss356 in that it's an open diff. I'd post up my old LSD pics so you could compare, but this site doesn't alow me to post up any more pics as I've reached my limit????
PM me your e-mail adress and I'll send you some pics of the stock LSD and the retaining clip problems.
Hope this helps?
Al.
