Question Runnin rich?

Hi all!

Great forum! I was wondering if anybody could help me out. The last little while I have been noticing quite a smell of gas in my 2004 4.7L V8 in the cab and outside. It usually happens during initial startup but is quite strong. Maybe a sensor? The truck seems to be running fine other than that....although when it is cold out I do hear a slight hiss like sound that is sporadic. That may be something different entirely though (maybe water pump bearing or something).

Hope this didnt ramble too much and any help would be appreciated.

you could have an exhaust leak, and when the engine warms up, the metal expands closing the leak. or you could have a bad 02 sensor . is that an egr motor?
is it throwing any cel's?

Do you smell the gas when you pop the hood?

Not sure what you mean by egr motor and no it isnt throwing any codes. I was wondering about the o2 sensor too.... Funny you mentioned about warming up because I also notice when it is cold I hear a sporadic slight hissing sound from the engine as well. Might be a bearing in the water pump though as it does sound somewhat familiar to bearing failure noises although its hard to tell for sure.

I appreciate the response!

I apologise for the length between posts, been super busy and had the work truck for a bit. Noticed the smell again yesterday and I popped the hood immediately. I definitely can smell it around the engine. It is pretty strong.

Thanks again for any help!

Bad o ring seal on a fuel injector????

I heard on another forum that this can happen.

His was a 4.7 as well and he very unfortunately lost his truck, as he drove it up a recovery trailer due to the ensuing fire.
I'd get it checked out real soon.
Sorry to worry you and It might not be your problem but............ I think you'd rather know?
Al.

I guess you could start to look for anything wet. I had taken a fuel rail system apart on a car once and put it all back together but the o-ring didnt seat right and I found out very soon afterwards. It wasnt leaking a lot but enough to smell it.

Just a follow-up on this problem. Had into a shop about a week and a half ago and they diagnosed the problem as the main fuel line seeping. Part was back ordered (lucky I had the work truck) and just got completed on last Friday. So far, no lingering smell.....all in all cost me about $200 with taxes. Turned out you cant just order the main fuel line from Mopar but it comes as a complete set.

Cheers

Glad to see youre getting it fixed but it reminds me about another story of Chrystler. My wife had an Eagle Vision which is the same as th Intrepid and Condorde. Anyway, the valve covers were leaky pretty bad and I had already tighened them a bit so I decided to replace them. Well replacing them meant taking everything apart including the fuel rails. Well getting them apart was so problem but putting them back together ended up damaging the O rings in the couplers. I didnt know this until we went down the road and had a strong smell of gas. I called the dealership and they would only sell the fuel rail assembly which was WAY more than what I needed and was about 300 bux. I ended up going to Autozone and getting some rubber fuel line and clamps for about $5. I cut the couplers off and slipped the hoses on, clamped them down and 3-4 years later she still has the car and never an issue.

Glad you got yours fixed though.
