2004 Ram Hemi " Whine"
I have a 2004 Dodge Hemi Quad Cab with only 4000 miles on it.
Over the last two thousand miles it has developed a significant " whine"
between 40 -50 mph. It appears the whine is only present when I have my foot
on the gas. When I take it off, the whine seems to disappear.
The noise is loud enough that I have to put the radio on to drown it
out at that 40-50 mph speed. It sounds as if its a gear whine but I am
not sure.
Any others experience this same thing ? Suggestions ?
Thanks

whay gears/tires? I assume you have the 545RE, so i can find what gear it's in using that, or if you know already, that would get you closer. That or it's your belt sl;ipping at the power peak or something...
"GM:...yes, I am going to take it in for warranty repairs. My point in
putting the issue on the Dodge site is to , hopefully, get some idea of what
the problem is BEFORE I go into the dealer.
I know its a stretch but , you know, some dealers may just
have the proverbial " thats just normal" routine and I would like
to be familiar enough with what it " could" be to
give them an intelligent comment back.
Thanks

Seriously though, have you tried to pinpoint where its coming from? Is it RPM related, speed related, or is it just erratic?
You should probably find the whine before you take it to the dealer, at least so you can tell the mechanic where it is coming from and if it happens to be low differential fluid (synthetic) or maybe low on tranny (automatic I assume) fluid.due to a bad seal, or something like that, they don't jack you around. If its tranny whine, it could be much more serious problems!!
Good Luck

Speed doesn't really mean much [normally]. What RPM does it happen at? Have you tried bringing the engine up to highway RPM with the trans in neutral?
It's an 04, so you have the 545RE if it's an automatic (which iu'm going to assume.
With 30" est tires and a est 3.55 axle and said tranny at 2000 RPM, it shows you'd be in 3rd gear (1:1) at 50 MPH.
NOTE: the 545RE automatic transmission equiped commonly with the HEMI V8 magnum block motor has TWO 2nd gears. The computer controls which gear should be selected for use, either 1.67:1 or 1.50:1.
You would be in second leading up to the 50 RPM est shift point.
Food for thought.
