Unbolt the purge can and hoses from under the truck to take a better and closer look at them. Doing it under the truck can be difficult unless it is very obvious and out in the open. After you have done something you think may resolve the issue, reset the PCM to clear the codes and drive it a while to see if they come back.

Did you just look at them ? Grab ahold and squeeze them between your fingers. Do they fell mushy or very dry ? Or do they return to the origional shape quickly ? They will usually dry rot and crack near the ends of the hoses where they connect.

Yea they are really mushy to the touch and have the stock white clamps on them so I will try to replace thoses first with new clamps... my buddy has a new decoder reader and we looked up the purge and it says its tryin to purge but cant so that must mean its plugged up or has failed..maybe the canister is even plugged?

Default evap 0440

Just bought this 2003, ram quad, 4x4, 1500, hemi, after four days driving the engine light goes on and it ended up to be a evap 0440 code. I took the advice here did the gas cap thing...no luck, then looked at the hoses sure enough the 5/8" i.d. hoses to the evac can were split and one was missing a clamp. should I do the battery trick to reset to codes? will that lock up my radio (theft protection) or isn't that a Dodge issue.

Ok two days after the auto zone guy reset my code that P0440 code comes up again! Spent 10 bucks on a new gas cap (seemed to seal better). If this isn't it I will get a smoke test for $50.00 to find the culprit.

Did you ever find the culprit? I've changed the Leak Detection Pump next to the canister before changing changing both canisters. Thanks!

I did finally find the problem, p0440 came up first then after a smoke test the shop said my LDP was bad ($170.00) to replace. I then read another code p0456 small leak, I rechecked all the hoses then replaced the LDP ($56.00). Victory all codes gone, engine light off The smoke test reveiled a bad valve in the LDP (would not close). The testing at a shop can pinpoint the faulty componet.

Good luck these evap issues can be a PIA, I was lucky.

I have a 2003 ram 4x4 hemi. Had p0441 come up. Looked around Evap canister and one of the hoses was cracked and half slipped off the nipple. I replaced all 4 hoses and all the fittings, and the gas cap. A week later the CEL came back on with the same p0441 code. Should I replace the purge solenoid? It would be cheaper than the 135 for the dealer smoke test. The purge solenoid is the thing in the engine bay behind the drivers side headlight right?

Any help would be great.

Yes! That's what I did. No more cel....4ish weeks later. I even skipped the hoses and gas cap went straight to purge.13 bucks at dealership.
