Default synthetic oil

When switching to synthetic oil is there anything you have to do to the motor before hand? Also do you refill with synthetic and from there on always synthetic no more conventional? Thanks never used synthetic before obviously. I've heard good things about the royal purple synthetic so I'm gonna give it a shot tomorrow. Hopefully quiet the hemi tick a bit.

You can switch back and forth and don't need to take any special precautions. I think you can even add conventional in a pinch when you're low. I think most people on here run mobil 1, but I am also giving royal purple a shot so let me know how it works for you.

I run synthetic also, when I switch over, I didnt take any precautions. However, I can afford to run Mobil1, or royal purple. The only thing I can afford to run is Castrol GTX, full syn.

Auto zone has a deal every once in a while, $30 for syn oil change, plus filter, K&N if I remember right

always use engine flush before switching to synthetic (when conventional has been in for awhile). the synthetic cleans everything so well it will be black in no time. also be careful when switching on a high mileage engine, carbon deposits may be loosened on your rings and you may start to use oil.

I'm switching to synth on my next oil change, about 37,000 miles.

Any particular brand of engine flush?

you do not need to "flush" your engine before switching to a synthetic. Straight from the Mobil 1 Website:

Myth:
I need to flush my engine before switching to Mobil 1.
Reality:
No special preparation is necessary when switching from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

However it IS true that a good full synthetic will loosen a lot of gunk and as such, I'd change oil at 3000 miles the first time...

If it's black in there from any kind of oil, tht means it's been neglected. i own 5 cars, 3 of which get Full synthetic and the other 2 get conventional. The conventional cars actually look cleaner than my synthetic cars because they get changed every 3kmi where as the synthetic one's get their changes every 5kmi, thus why they are dirtier. If your oil is black, you haven't been changing it out nearly enough. Just because you are under the 3kmi mark doesn't mean you can still drive with that oil if it's black. That means it's very dirty and should be changed.
I'm not saying the oil is bad, just dirty and that's just as equally as bad for your engine.

I personally would never use any type of "engine flush" in any of my vehicles. It just doesn't sound appealing to me at all. If you take care of your engine, it should never need anything. The most i would ever think of doing is pouring a bottle of Mystery oil in like 1kmi before you change the oil. That will do a thorough cleaning job.
