Default Towing 9k with a 1500 megacab

I am looking at buying a 5th wheel. It is 8100 empty and 10300 GVWR. This truck is a 07 1500 megacab Hemi. Who has experience with towing with these trucks. I have searched and searched and searched on the difference between a 1500 and 2500 hemi pickups and cannot find a forsure answer. I would plan to bag it and probably put 4.56 gears in it. I know the truck will tow it I just dont want to"kill" the truck doing it.

Put in the gears she will pull it. Your truck is a rebadged 2500,not a 5 lugger. It will not be as fuel efficient as a CTD and is lacking in the torque, but it will go.

regear will give you a new grasp on towing the load, maybe a tuner as well. You should be fine, assuming the weight you estimate is correct.

My recommendation is no, dont do it.

My Trailers stats

280BH Specifications
Shipping Weight 4752
Carrying Capacity 1293
Hitch 445
Length 31' 2"
Width 8'
Height 10' 2"
Fresh Water 30
Waste Water 30
Gray Water 30

Now this one is a bit lighter then the 05 Cherokee I had ... but I was pulling the 05 trailer with a QC Hemi with 3.92's. ... the added weight of the Mega cab and 3.73's is a mild concern .. but you will be stretching the limits with a trailer the size you mentioned. The Mega cab doesnt do all that great a job when I compare it to the lighter QC with 3.92's. My Mega is a gasser ...

Some will say it can be done. Yes. It can be. But you will be taxing your truck. Go to RV.net and ask the same question.

Again, I wouldnt.

I saw a 2007 Ram 1500 HEMI QC pulling a 5th wheel. It can be done but I wouldn't recommend it. Your megacab might be able to pull 10-11k but I wouldn't do it for a long period of time. I always heard it's good practice to be about 1000 lb under your max. Just incase you need to add extra stuff and it doesn't hurt your vehicle as much.

+1 I don't think people realize the mega cab 1500 is really a 2500.

Try it and see! Then let me know how it does. I know Someday I want to regear, but that takes a good chunk of money. So I am thinking about trying a similar setup with just a set of airbags. I know it is not ideal, but the 3-4 times I haul a year I should get by.

What do others think, about an air bag setup with similar (slightly lighter trailer) on the same truck?
