so i just went to put my center caps on my rims (enkei solars) and one of them was hard to turn so i backed it out to see if it would go in easier and it wouldnt and then i looked into it and the threads in the actual rim to screw into seem stripped, can i smooth that out and rethread it with a slightly wider whole? i believe there aluminum

you might be able to just pull out any loose threads and run a tap through it, and not redrill. you could add some teflon tape on the screw to tighten it up, or fill the cavity with rtv as a glue. i'd try this first.

you could also fill with jbweld and retap.

if that doesn't work, then yes, you cad drill out to the next size and retap for bigger screw or an insert. if the alum is pretty soft, you might just use a little bigger screw and let it cut its own threads.

 

ill get some pics tomorrow or try to its a small hole but yeah theres like 4-5 lines of threads and then nothing so its easy to turn a small amount and then just stops without alot of force

 

heli-coil it is what i would do if you cant re-tap it

 

I agree with weedahoe - basically you redrill and tap to a larger size, insert the heli-coil, then insert the original sized screw (or the same one if it's still good).

 

yeah the bolts for it are fine its just the threads in the whole are screwed up, where can you get the heli coil at?

 

Try to retap it first, before you helicoil it with an even bigger tap.

 

if you are getting resistance after 4-5 threads, there is still material there, it's just mangled. i'm with frog, just tap what you got, should be fine.

 

I remember aftger reading about guys you dropped the trans pan to change fluid and would break the OEM screws or strip threads. That made me go to Lowes and buy better bolts and be careful about tightening them down.
