I just bought a 06 Hemi with 30k on it. Heard nothing wrong at the dealer it was ~65 degrees out. I take her home that night(~55) park her for 10 mins... may family wants to hear her run, so I start her up and get some loud lifter noise... sounded like just one lifter was collapsed... it went away after 10 seconds. This morning I start her up, same lifter noise only it lasted for ~1 min. I am not sure how much this truck has been driven over the last 2-4 months because it has been at the dealer... do these Hemis have lifter problems?

 

Everyone always comments when my truck is idling on how it sounds like they can hear the lifters. But it has always done that since I got it. Dealer told me it was normal on the Hemi.

 

welcome to DF, and congratulations on the truck. what you are hearing is reffered to as the 'Hemi tick'. Some brand new engines have it, some done' develope it till 60k, some don't have it at all, or anywhere in between. Rest assured that many (if not most) hemis have that tick, and I haven't heard anyone having problems because of it.

 

Yeh a tick, tick, tick when idling is how i would describe it. Mine has had it since day 1 of ownership and still does it. Like I said, dealer told me it was normal and at 60k, the only problem I've had with my truck was a recent replacement of the EGR valve.

 

My truck started to tick at 400miles. I switched to Synthetic after break-in and it didn't do anything as far as to quiet it down. My last oil change i put 6qts of Synthetic along with 1qt Lucas Synthetic stabilizer. MUCH better. It's almost barely even noticeable now. And the Synthetic Lucas is very pourable and not 50w like the normal one is. It's specifically made for lighter weight oils in newer engines. Again, it's not that Honey thick crap of most "engine" fixes in a bottle. It poured as fast as 10w-30 would. And if your on top of your oil changes like i am, you don't have to worry about extra caked on build-up from the stuff as you would get by over running dirty oil.

It isnt valve train tick like all the hemi's and ls engines have... it is lifter clacking, most likely because the lifter is not pressurizing with oil at start up, once I start driving and oil pressure goes up it goes away. Collapsed lifter clacking is much louder than valve train ticking.

 

7 quarts total? Isn't that too much? Or does yours take more oil than mine?

 

You better get to reading your owners manual......

 

I haven't changed my own oil for a while. I was thinking it was 6 quarts total. It costs me 20 bucks or a little more to buy the stuff to change my own oil and I have a shop that will do it for me for 27 bucks and rotates my tires and inspects my other fluids for free. Hard to beat and I don't have to dispose of the old oil.

 

Anyone could do it cheaper at a quick lube shop, fine if you trust them.
Do you really know what kind of oil you are getting ? Cheap filters ?
I've never taken to the lube shops I prefer to do it myself, that way I know 100% whats going in my truck.
Maybe when I am crippled up and unable to crawl under my truck I'll go with quick lube shops, until then, DIY
