Default Looked at a 03 Ram 2500 4x4 SLT, questions inside

Hi everyone. I looked at this truck at a dealer, but am not very familiar with Dodge. The truck had 153k miles on it, which I believe is high, but supposedly they are highway miles. Anyway, the truck drove great, but I am concerned about the transmission. I have heard that they are still not very good on this model. They were asking $9995, but when I said no way, they cam back at $8367 which I still believe is high. I sure I can get them down more, but I am concerned because this is the first model year for the 3rd gen 2500, plus the truck has high mileage and potential tranny issues in its future. Any advice?

Do you have any more info about the truck? Gas or diesel, Quad cab, or regular cab? Those 2 would make quite a difference.

Def too high still. I could maybe see if it had a plow with it but i'd talk them down first and take it to a local mechanic on your test drive if you made friends with any around you.

If you decide to get it keep haggling until you get them to show you what they paid for the truck....they'll have a print out with everything broken down from what they paid to what they put into it. Remember they want to make money too so if you're buying the truck outright they'll want a little more than what they paid...makes sense.

Oh and with miles that high on a 4x4 you will have tranny probs in the near future...and no warranty company in their right mind will warranty it. I say keep looking around.

The truck is a four door with a hemi. They took it on trade during a big tent sale, they want to keep the price down because of the miles, so they only gave it an inspection and an oil change. Not sure what they gave them for it on trade, my guess is around $5k ish.

Dont listen to that dork.

In this economy you can wheel and deal allot with the dealers, especially when it comes to gas guzzlers. Why do you think they called you and dropped the price so easy. The 03 Ram is like the red headed step child of the 3rd Genners. It has a different ECM,and tranny computer and the engine is a bit different because this Hemi dosent have an EGR valve. The good news is that the Superchips tuner adds more HP and Torque to the 03 than in later years. Take the truck and have it checked out by a mechanic you trust. Get as much history as you can on the previous owner and what the primary purpose of what the truck was used for. Just because they say its all highway miles dosent mean nothin if the truck was pulling a 10K lb trailer 90% of the time. I have seen 3rd gen trannys last a long time it just depends on how well the maintenance was maintained and how the truck was being used. If something seems to good to be true it usually is. There are a allot of these trucks for sale and a bigger better deal comes along every day...
