If it were my truck, first I'd check the color of the fluid and the dipstick tip to see if there are signs of worn clutches. Pull the tip through your fingers, if you get a black greasy power substance on your fingers, you have worn clutches (but that's not your noise). Fluid should be pink, not brown, and smell it, to see if it smells burnt. Then I'd get under it and up close, have some one start it, and listen for the sounds, starting around the converter (pump) then the tail. It is a possibility the clunking could be coming from a loose ring and pinion or even worn spider gears. To check this, go from park to drive and reverse, and see how much the drive shaft turns while sitting still and applying the brakes. There should only be from little to a couple of inches of turn in the shaft. At the same time, listen up close to your chunk or carrier to hear for a possible clunking. That being said, get your **** over to a tranny specialist , I doubt one is checking your truck at the dealership, he may be their best mechanic, but not a TS. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

My truck makes a clunk type sound when putting it into reverse or drive. Its not metal grinding though, just the sound of drive engaging. Its more an annoyance than an actual problem with the truck

Does your state have a Lemon Law? After this many attempts to pinpoint and fix the same problem, you might have a case for it, assuming it is really a problem (grinding to me is a problem). I'd say listen to 1954Radio and take it to a tranny specialist. If they say there's a problem, then bring his report back to a dealer, and if they still don't budge, contact your State Attorney General's office.

Default Dodge ram 1500

Hello,
Thank you for all of the replies. So, my truck makes a clunk noise when only going in to park. It sounds like that may be normal, but when going in to reverse it is a grinding noise...not a clunk noise.
I am in California. I have looked in to the lemon law and was told you need to go to one dealership 3 times for the problem??? The issue is that I have been to two dealership two times each (they are both out of business now) and this new dealership once.
i talked to a independent mechanic that works on dodge and they quoted $175 to determine what is wrong with going in to reverse. Does that sound about right for a price? Also, should dodge pick up that bill if it is something under warranty?
I have been nervous to take it anywhere else to have dodge come back and say that it is a mechanic error and thus they won't cover it. With my luck I wouldn't be suprised if that happened.
I picked up my truck from the dealership and was told that a durango (that has the same transmission) as me was brought in for the same thing. I guess they are going to be taking out his transmission and trying to find out what is going on and then HOPEFULLY call me to fix my truck. They said they have never heard this noise before, but this Durango that came in had the same noise as my truck....interesting. Fingers crossed I will have answers this week.

Thank you again for all of your comments!

get the dealer ship to pull the drive shaft, if its still clunking when shifting into R, than you have rulled out the Universal joint, I think it could be the end of the trans housing were the dirive shaft slides into

Mine does the same thing and has since new...either it's normal or there was a bad batch of trannies in 07 Mine will go into park and reverse smooth as silk if I let the rpms drop to 600-700 after a start...might want to try that.

grinding= not normal as SRT explained.
Clunk...Mine does this too, but only if I'm slightly moving. At dead stops, i get no clunk, just if i shift while I'm barely moving.

Has the dealership done any Flushing on it to maybe free up a sticky valve? Also, 3 times for the Lemon law is for fixing the Identical part/problem. Them diagnosing it 3 times means absolutely nothing as far as the lemon Law is concerned. Your truck needs an open Warranty card open for several months at a few times a rip for the same problem. It's a lot harder to get a car covered under the Lemon law than you would think or even want to begin to deal with.

Mods, it's been over a week for PA and PM restrictions. Could i get some help here? I've been a good boy and haven't Barked or Bitten anyone...lol
