Dodge ram 1500 Nothing but problems
Hello everyone!
I apologize if this has already been discussed....new to this forum.
I have a question...hope someone might be able to help.
I purchased a new dodge ram 1500 4x4 in 2007. Ever since I have had the truck it makes a LOUD grinding noise when put in to reverse. The noise lasts about 2-3 seconds. When I put the truck in park it makes a loud "CLUNK" noise. I have taken my truck in to two different dealerships (all have been of no help). One dealership replaced the valve body. When I picked up my truck it was still making the noise. They told me it needed a few days to brake in and the noise would go away...never did. Kept taking it in and then they said it was normal. I had them take me to the back and try all the other trucks in to reverse...not one made the noise. Every person I talk to says it is my transmission, but the dealerships won't help me. I am getting SO frustrated. I have a warranty and an extended warranty. Dodge even called up a Chrysler advisor for the area (he was very rude) and said he never heard the noise when he saw my truck, but it is a normal noise. WHAT?!? I then took it to another dodge and when the advisor heard the noise he cringed and said that is not normal. The advisor called and said the noise was not there when the tech tried it. They want me to pick up my truck and bring it in again when it does it again. This will be my 5th visit for this problem. Everyday the truck makes the noise for me, but suddenly stops at the dealership. I have tried calling dodge corporate and NOTHING. They even go as far as to hang up on me since they say they have answered my questions when in fact they are dodging my question. :-) Any advice? Anyone have a number for dodge corporate I should try.

That is horse crap. My truck has almost 150,000 miles and does not clunk when set in park. And grinding going into reverse is not normal at all. Not even if it was grinding for only a second. Transmission would be my guess. Thats sucks out loud. Literally.
I'd say try a third dealership. It obviously sounds like you have an issue with the transmission. With Chrysler in flux like it is, it's possible the dealerships are hesitant to do major work for fear of not getting paid by Chrysler. I'm also seeing an alarming number of people go into the dealer with real issues and being told "it's within Chrysler specs", this is total BS. I feel for all y'all.
What area are you in? It's possible one of us can suggest a dealer not far from you. There are some really good dealerships out there, unfortunatley, 2/3 of them are useless.

If it bothers you that much, I would take it to a tranny specialist, they'll usually pin point the problem if it is the tranny. Tell them about the warranty and no one being able to figure it out. It will probably make him trouble shoot it more thoroughly to show his tech skills. Get his evaluation on paper or writen estimate, and go slam chrysler with it even if it cost $. mine and my dad's rams both clunk into reverse and park, i assume it's normal, never caused any problems so i don't make it one.

Hm, Usually when you get a clunk like that is it a universal or something with slop in it.
I would say that is not good, there are 5 dodge trucks on our property from a '83 up to a '04 and none to what you described.

My 03 Ram 1500 and a friends 08 Ram 1500 do not make any unusual noise when placed in gear. Let's face it, any kind of grinding is not normal. I agree with getting the noise properly documented by a transmission specialist.

Grinding is NOT normal. A clunk going into park, depends. If you are parking on a hill and you release the brakes and hear a clunk, of course that would be drive shaft.
Never had either of those on my old 05 or my new 09. The only thing I ever noticed with shifting in my 05 was on a VERY rare occasion it would take a split second longer to shift into R or D from P.
