04 ram, when I hit any bump/dip I hear a little clunk/thud. Don't feel anything weird, hard to say where it is comeing from but I think it's the front. Could it be bad shocks? They are the origninal and it has 50k on it.
Any problem areas on these trucks I should keep a eye on?
Trailer hitch. lol. My tri-ball will clunck every once in a while.
50k miles, is time to replace anyways. Buy a new set, and see what happens. Just to throw it in there; everybody is going to say either bilstien or rancho shocks.

A few months ago, I had the same issue as you, though the cause might be different. Whenever I went over a bump, I heard a thud, but it sounded as if it was coming from underneath for me. I eventually found out that it was the storage flaps under the passenger seats in the rear. The only thing keeping the flaps closed is an elastic band. Going over a bump caused the flaps to slightly open and slam shut, which caused my clunking sound. It might not be your issue, but its worth a shot.
True, tie rods would be a common problem. Do this: get under there with grease gun, and gun everything up, and see what that gets you. Thats the cheapest options right now.
Come to think of it, Ive never greased underneath... lol. Maybe I should do that... lol

There are no grease points on our trucks, they're all sealed. So that's why its so common these things go. I believe that you can replace these parts with greasable ones though.
i had the same problem for awhile and so i changed tie rod ends and ball joints and it ended up being play in the rack and pinion
What was the fix for the rack & pinion?
As for the original post, could be shocks or maybe bottoming. Check your bumpstops. 1. to see how hard are you hitting. 2. are they missing?
