Bad A/C Compressor causing overheating?

I dropped my truck off at a mechanic to diagnose the reason for a vacuum leak sound and the truck overheating while towing and on very hot days. Well they just called back and said both are from a bad A/C Compressor and it'd be $854 to fix it. I said leave it in the parking lot for me to pick it up. Just double checking but this can cause an overheating situation? I found some at local junkyards price from $100-$135 so I'm wondering how hard of a job it would be? Looks like it may require special tools? I may just pull it all out and save the cash although it won't be good since the truck is used a lot on long trips while towing horses. Opinions?
