2002 Dodge Ram can anybody help me?
I have a 2002 Dodge Dually 6 speed 4 wheel drive. 10000 miles on it.
I pull a 28 foot draft horse trailer with it.
I did have the chip put in it and 4 inch exhaust run from the
manifold all the way back. Its the cummings diesel. I love my truck!
This truck is a pulling machine and I have NEVER had a problem with it.
I am a woman and with 6 horses in the trailer I need something I can depend on.
ONE THING I cannot depend on is my mechanic-I do live in a small town and have
very limited resources for Dodge repairs. This mechanic works in the shop where
I purchased my Pickup.
Monday I was pulling my empty trailer home from dropping off a couple horses at the vet clinic. All of a sudden on a flat stretch of road my 2 high popped into Neutral. I called the dodge dealer immediatly from the side of the road and he said try 4 high. I did and it worked, then I put it back in 2 high and it worked. He said I must have bumped it and the vibration kicked it out into neutral. Ok, I have owned these great trucks for 10 years and never been stupid enough to that before but hey I'm blonde so I figured why not? and continued on my merry way.
I went across a set of rough railroad tracks about 4 miles further down the road and clunk out it pops again. I slowed down and put it back into 2 high.
About 6 more miles or so going up a hill clunk it does it again and this time 2 high would not work. I put it in 4 high and limped into the dealership.
They changed the oil in the transfer case and said it was dirty and maybe that was what the problem was. Ok I'm blonde but not THAT dense and told them I'm sure that WAS NOT it.
2 days later my husband heads to the vet clinic to pick up the horses and makes it 10 miles or so before it pops out again.
Took it back to the dealership and they said they would tear into it-oh my god I thought this IS scary.
They just called me and told me that nothing seemed loose or obviously bent or broke but they went ahead and ordered a new transfer pump and sleeve?
THEN they have the nerve to ask me if I was sure it was the transfer case and not the transmission that was slipping? DUH!!
Then they told me they have no idea what is going on but hope this fixes the problem. I have never posted to this forum and I am hoping I posted this in the right spot.
Does anybody have any ideas what might be happening with my truck?
Thank You
Heidi

sounds like this mechanic like being a parts swapper. switching out things untill he gets the right one and you end up flipping the bill.
first, check the linkage, it may be loose somewhere and that could cause this, also while the transfer is apart get them to look at the shift fork, it may be worn, that will be cheaper than replaceing the pump and the sleeve.

Thanks a million,
I am going in there tonight to see exactly what the he-- is going on,
and will ask them about the shifting fork.
I really appreciate your help on this, I have a 1200 mile pull coming up
and don't need any problems on the road.
I know my truck is sound as a dollar but my mechanic is
......well questionable.
I will post the outcome on here when my truck is finally out of the shop.

not a problem
another good place to ask questions is here, turbo diesel register it is a $35 sign-up, but with that you get a quarterly issue of the TDR magazine, quite possably the best $35 Ive spent on my truck
check out the forums, lots of good information there.

Another prime example of how the dealership service system is broke, mechanics dont get paid for diagnosis of problems when they are to be covered under warranty so they do just swap parts until they either get it right or it gets passed onto another mechanic. Only when it is a customer pay ticket do you have a chance of them even trying to actually figure out what is wrong because they can charge you for it. Plus as it has been mentioned in other threads before, the service people will rarely make you aware of a possible problem or TSB that may address whatever trouble a customer might be having.
