Not sure with these engines. Sometimes you can just pry it out and pop in the new one. Other times you have to take off the drain pan.

Depending on the mileage of your truck, You might take off the pan anyways and clean it out real well.

Go buy the seal, Looking at its shape will tell you all you need to know.

At 40K miles, I wouldn't bother pulling the pan if I didn't have to. Go purchase a new seal from and autoparts store, You should be able to tell how it goes in by the shape, That will tell you if you need to pull the pan or not. Im leaning towards not.

If not, Get your self a pick, Carefully use the pick to jam into the old seal. Be very careful to not scratch the surrounding area, And pull the old seal out. Put the new seal in using the old seal as a block to tap against the new one, Make sure it is secure and your good to go.

Again this is general info, I know very little about the 4.7 engines.
