Default 02 Dodge Ram stock vs aftermarket CAI

Well after reading around on the forums I was starting to look at installing a CAI with cone filter on the 02 Dodge I purchased yesterday.

So I went to look under the hood a little more closely and see where it would run and I notice that the 02 Dodge Ram seems to already have a CAI style.

Now I know that the air filter box is slowing down the air before it travels onto the motor but the air temp wouldn't be changing there, or if it does, barely at all.

So if I was to pull out the air filter box and just do a direct 3" pipe to a cone filter in the same spot, would there be any noticeable benefit?

Can add pictures a little later if anyone wants to know what I mean on how it currently runs.

lots of people do that same thing... homemade CAI. Its a heck of a lot cheaper than buying one, and not noticeably worse in performance than the high dollar ones (with the exception of the ram air kind like Vararam)

Guess I will just put the pictures in anyways.

View of hose running from engine to air filter box:

And so to make my question more detailed. If I take out the large box, and run a hose all the way down to where the current intake is, and just put a cone filter there. Will it improve airflow?

All you really need to do is get rid of the stock airbox over the engine (the part that says 4.7 Magnum on it, and run a tube from the filter box to the TB. The airbox is the restrictive part, you'll get close to the same results as a full CAI.

So why do they even put the airbox on?

Airaid makes a setup that mounts to the TB and uses the OEM filter box. Eliminates the hat and smooths out the intake. I would think it flows the same as a cone filter. What I really like about it is that the OEM snorkle really hangs down low in the frontal cooler air and I think it is only priced around $130. I don't know how it sounds but it has a nice appearance. Now, if it is all about sound. It would be hard to beat my K&N 77-1533 at full song.

cold air intakes have NOTHING to do with air temperature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOTHING!!! its all about the flow rate and noise. thats what the dodge engineers are trying to keep down. hence the hemi or magnum "hat". that is a resonator that make the engine more quiet. the stock air intake flows 90% as well at a CAI i would imagine.
