I put the herculiner in a few months ago. I wanted to get rid of the drop in liner that my truck came with. Im not sure on other's herculiners but mine is not shiney and also has a nice finnish. I just did what the package said and then added the uv top coat. I haven't had problems with chipping but I only use my bed for transporting cases of beer, my atv and other random materials. I really do believe that the quality of the finnished product relies heavily on your prep work. It was a huge pain in the *** to sand it down, and took me a few hours, but I wanted it done right. I am really happy with it so far but I wouldn't go this route if i used my truck bed alot more vigorously. In that case, I would for sure go with line-x.

 

I have heard nothing but good things about herculiner from jeep guys, but they are using it for the inside of there jeep. I bought some herc last week and am going to put it on friday. I will try to take some pics and post the results. As with anything there is always something better for more money. There is no way in the world I would pay 500-600 for line-x, not saying it is not excellent stuff but definetely not worth the money to me. If I had the money and a new loaded truck I would probably go that route but my '02 with 130k isn't worth it.

 

I can attest to this! unfortunately my truck had the over-the-rail type of drop in liner already installed when I bought it. The jackass must have hauled loose sand & gravel in the bed just before he traded it in (or got it repo'd, i dunno). anyhow, i removed the liner a few weeks back to clean out all the sand and bull**** that got underneath the liner. that's when i noticed that the liner left scuff marks in the paint along the rails. SUCKS!! I had planned to get rid of the liner since I dont like how it looks "over-the-rail" but now I gotta wait. Getting some touch-up paint work done and dents removed, but waiting on a roll pan and some new mirrors so I can get it all done at once. After that it's straight to my local Line-X. Bottom line: don't get the over-the-rail liners! Get rail caps if you want protection for the rails, they wont shift or slide on top of your paint.

 

same here man. i have over the rail, and you cant see the scuff marks but if i were to remove the bed liner you would see it and there fore im just gonna live with my over the rail bed liner lol...

glad the herculiner worked out for you bertens, one of only a handful that i know are happy with it. and as you said the UV protectant is a must! ive heard that from EVERY single person that has used it!

 

I put it on a Tundra in the family and it's ok but I wouldn't do it again. I had no problem with its roughness -- it's got plenty of that. I didn't use the UV protectant be because naturally the AutoZone selling the products didn't have any of it in stock.

It's been 2-3 years now and it's come off in a few spots but mostly is still intact. I will say it's nothing compared to the commercial offerings though -- save up for them or use a drop-in. I love my stock plastic liner.

Using it on a trailer is a good idea though. I'll have to try it when it's time to touch up my utility trailer.

 

Just finished putting my herculiner on today so far it looks great. I will try to get some pics posted. I managed to cover an 8ft bed with just 1gal but I have an extra qt just in case I need to do some touch ups.

 

Just like most things in life, its all about the quality of your work...most people putting in Herculiner are doing it for the first time and their not really sure how to do it. They wanted 1000.00 to do the inside of my jeep, I Herculined it myself for less than 150. Some places where I sprayed it on too thick it got slippery and places where I sprayed it right, it had a really great texture. Knowing now, what I didn't then, I am pretty sure I could do a really good job spraying the bed of my truck. But I learned last time not to do it in the middle of an Arkansas summer, b/c its just too damn hot.

 

it say's not to do it in 90+ weather or it gets really tacky. i'm not sold on it yet so i think i'll wait and line-x my truck unless there's prof of good applications out there.
