Question 60-65mph shaking

First off, this is what I have: 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 SXT, Reg Cab, Automatic Transmission, 6 cyl engine. I don't use it to haul around anything; I pretty much just use it for driving around.

A few days after I bought it I noticed the truck would shake when driving between 60-65 mph. It wouldn't shake below 60mph, and seemed to stop shaking after I got it above 65mph. I was going to take it back to the dealer but then all of a sudden it just stopped doing it. Or I think more accurately... The shaking became so unnoticeable that I was no longer certain I could convince the dealer that it was actually shaking. So I just chalked it up to being a new vehicle and I was going through some sort of "break-in" period and it just worked itself out.

But now it seems like the shaking is coming back and becoming more noticeable again. Again, same as before, it only occurs when driving between 60-65 mph. I've read up on all sorts of theories about this:

- bad tires
- front end is out of alignment
- the overdrive transmission kicks in too early to up the mpg for the epa
- it's a design flaw in the truck

So, has anyone else out there had this problem?

I bought it brand new less than 4 months ago, but I know that it had sat on the dealer's lot for awhile (it was built in like May 2008). I just chalked that up to it having 2 things few other people wanted - a regular cab and a 6 cyl engine. I also had a problem with it spitting out gas whenever I would fill up. The dealer fixed that problem by replacing the entire gas tank. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i had a similar problem with a 98 5.9L ram. the culprit was actually a head misfiring, which can be identified and tested for free at most oil change locations.

Where do you feel the vibration? Is it the floor, or the steering wheel, or? The steering wheel would indicate the front wheels are out of balance. You might have a cylinder mis-fire, as meandean said. Does the vibration only happen between 60-65, or is it most noticeable there?

my guess would be an unbalanced driveshaft...lift up back of truck, put in drive and have a friend hold brake so shaft only spins a little bit...see if it's curved or anything...basically doing what you do when you go to a pool hall, and roll a stick on a table to determine how straight it is.

and like ppl asked...is it ONLY between 60-65 mph? or ALL the time...but simply gets really bad at that range of speed. i ask because maybe wheels aren't balanced.

i feel the same thing... truck vibrates around then and then accelerating above 80 it stops.. i just figured its an inbalance somewhere in the driveline

1+ Been tracking down the same type of gremlin in my truck for the last week. Had new skins put on about a month ago, and that's when things started shaking, vibrating, shuddering. I finally broke down this morning and took it into a DIFFERENT tire shop to have the wheels checked, and every single wheel was over 3 oz off. Now, it's smooth sailing.

Although mine is a 1997, you might still want to have the weights checked out.

I had a similar problem in mine. Mine would shake the front on the highway. The sides of my tires were pretty worn (freaking awesome dodge steering has that quirk to it), so I rotated the tires. After that, the rear end shook on the highway. My guess is that these trucks are very sensitive to imbalances in the drive line. I got new tires and the problem went away. My only suggestion is to get your wheels balanced every once in a while. 20k or so should do.
