What kind of oil in the rear end?
I called my dealer and they told me 85W90 for the rear end oil in my 2003 Ram. Another dealer told me 80W90 or maybe straight 90, depending on what kind of rear end I have. Advanced Auto Parts told me 75W140. So, how do I determine what kind of rear end I have? What oil should I use?
Check your owners manual to be sure. In the dash door there should be a tag that says what gears you have but that doesn't effect the fluid other than that it may need lsd additive if it has an anti-slip rear. According to my haynes manual 2003 1500 and later take 75w-140 synthetic and 2002 1500 takes 75w-90.
Thanks Chambers. I want to pick some up on my way home, but since my truck is parked in the garage I wasn't sure what kind to get. I think the 75-140 is better for towing too. My poor truck only gets to play on the weekends. I have a 2001 Ram with the small 6 cyl. engine in it (work provided vehicle). It's painfull to drive with such a small engine.
Regardless of what the manual says. get 75w-140 Synthetic if you do any kind of towing or run it hard. If you get the New Mobil 1 LS bottles, then you don't have to worry if you have limited slip or not because it has additive in with it. So regardless, it's going in....lol It takes out all the guess work! You'll need 3 bottles.

Chattering when going around a turn, especially when towing. Towing brings it out much more.
Like I said, if you put in Mobil 1 75w-140 and it has the letters LS on the bottle.....No need to even worry if you have limited slip or not because the fluid has the additive already in the oil. So regardless of what carrier you have, just pout in about 2.5 bottles of the stuff and call it a day. I wouldn't put anything But Synthetic in ANY rear differential housing. It gets very hot and those gears and bearings work hard. Why not treat them with a little respect!
im at jiffy lube now. 75w140 in back. 75w90 in front. xfer case is reg trans fluid. did it all for $110. fluids alone were $75 at autozone. too much to do to do myself. Thanks everyone.
