Transponder key question
I bought, online, a spare transponder key (right on photo) for my 2006 Dodge RAM 1500. I thought that the chip in the one with the remote buttons would be the same as the new key. When I went to the Dodge dealer to have it cut they told me that my new key had a different chip than my current key with the remote (left in photo). They said that they could cut it and try to program it (at a cost of $50), but it might not work, and, even if it did work it would only work once or twice and then the truck's security system would be disabled and I would have to have the truck towed to the dealer to have it "unlocked". Is this really true? Or am I being "snowed"?
Thanks
Thanks
There are 2 different classes of Sentry transponder. I & II.
Your 2006 has Sentry II. If that key is for later model Chryslers then yes it will work. I bought similar key and works just fine. I bought it so I didn't have the bulky key to carry around with my alarm remote.
I paid $23 for mine because it has the Ram logo on it. Paid $1.07 for the cut and I have 2 original keys so programming additional one's is easy. If you only have 1 key, you will have to go to the dealer.
SOunds lie the dealer is telling you B.S. get the key cut for a buck or 2 and program it.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounded "fishy" to me.
Dealers are ridiculous with those keys.
They told me $180 for a new key. I got one from ebay, after them going "omg wtf bbq whered u get this!!!111!!" they cut and programmed it for $20.

My local Dodge dealer wanted around $150 for the blank and $50 to cut and program it. You would think that a company that's trying to get customers would go the extra mile to be helpful. NOT! Instead, they continue to try and "screw" you. Not only with outrageous pricing, but bad information that is intended, in my opinion, to "make a sale".
Does anyone know if the security chip in the key with the remote buttons is the same as the security chip in the key without the remote buttons? Can I use the "remote" keys (I have two of them) to program the non-remote key?
Thanks
Thanks
Dear,RockRR the new grey key should work .if you have two keys all ready program the new one if it doesnot program after using the first two keys all it will do is store a code. IT will not shut your truck down. I have programmed more than i can count. if you lived close by i would let you use my star or drb3 and let you do it your self it only takes ten min with the dealer tool. thanks jon

I got lucky last year and one of my local Home Depots has a locksmith who comes in once a week and can sell the blank, cut it and program it. I think it was $69.99 plus tax. It looks the same as the oem minus the Rams Head.
