Default getting rid of 20's ..... how small can I go?

I'm assuming that a 17 with similar backspacing to a stock 17 will be no problem as I don't think there is any difference in the rest of the vehicle, but if you know otherwise please chime in.

I know a few of you have successfully fit 17's on your rig that originally came with 20's.... but has anyone fit anything smaller? 16's, 16.5's? If you did fit something smaller... what width & backspacing did you use? Did you have to do any grinding on the calipers or anything like that.

17's are the smallest, anything else won't clear the brakes.

Do you have 17's & can see that there is zero clearance? Not disagreeing with you by any means, I just want to make 100% sure that there is no way something smaller will go on there without grinding calipers....

I agree with going to smaller rims.. I have those hideous 20" rims on my '02 4x4... they just looks stupid on a 4 wheel drive. I'd rather have a smaller rim with more tire than bigger rim and less tire.

Gotta see what I can sell these ugly things for (I can't imagine anyone would want to buy them though[])

With tires they go for over 1k on ebay.

I want to di it just because I don't like the look. It's really just a personal decision. I don't think they look terrible, but I do like the smaller wheel, more tire look.

If anyone has a black ram and wants to trade gas cap doors I have a nice factory brushed alum one I also wanna swap out.

Bigger wheels are good for handling on street-only vehicles. Smaller wheels will improve ride both on and off road, as well as improve accelleration and braking, and greatly improve off-road capability. Switching from 20 to 17 only nets you 1.5" more distance from the rocks to the bottom edge of your wheel, but sometimes that's all it takes to keep from breaking the rim.
