I said "cold war era and before", not "cold war". That's the difference. I wasn't blaming the cold war, I was blaming the prevailing attitudes of the time. Second issue - rooting for one's team is different than insisting that another country's product is inferior for the sole reason of it being from where it is. I'm bigoted against Korean cars, not because they're from Korea, but rather because they're made as cheaply as possible to try to break into the market. They're VASTLY superior to where they were a few years ago, but I'm not convinced that they're on par with the rest of the market yet. Maybe they are, but I haven't even looked at them recently so I don't really know. Coming up in my next post is where I admit I made a mistake, but I stand by what I wrote here.

The Cummins powered trucks are an anomoly. The truck itself isn't any better than the gas powered ones, yet they retail for twice as much because the engine is that good. There is simply no foreign competition, so what do I have to look at? I wanted a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a decent sized engine. I like the Dodge looks and IMHO they're the best trucks out there in the heavy duty segment. I could have looked at a Chevy, but I'd rather puke. I could have looked at a Ford, but again, I don't like them as much as the Dodge trucks. So while I feel that yes, Chrysler products are less reliable than Honda or Toyota, neither one of them made anything worth looking at instead. And since there's no competition really, the price of the Cummins powered trucks stays high due to the insane price of new ones.

Some of these posts are funny; I love how the cold war was "bigoted" It (if I remember correctly was Caucasians hating Caucasians)
Funny how you didn't read the post right. It wasn't the cold war that I was referring to, but rather the bigoted values that people held after WWII, Korea, Vietnam - meaning if it's made by Asians it's junk. They were our sworn enemies and so we must hate everything of theirs. Nevermind the fact that some of those nations happen to be our allies.
Let me see if I misread your post - The paragraph I was referring to says:

It's a global economy now. The whole idea of domestic versus import is a leftover from the bigoted cold war era and before. Mini Coopers have Neon based engines (until the redesign in 06 or so). The Pontiac Vibe is a rebadged Toyota.
No reference to WWII, Koreans, Vietnam. If I remember my rules of grammar correctly, each paragraph is to be considered its own thought. Accordingly I did not misread your post, you simply did not post what you wanted to. Obviously there is no sin in that, however, in the future you should not point fingers at others when it would be better to admit our own mistakes. I admit mine all the time.

Speaking to the point of your post; however, "car guys" have always been irrational. I will not consider a Ford or Chevy (and what is more American than Chevy right?) So “buy American†is no more bigoted than “don’t buy Chevyâ€. And even if it was, it is certainly no more bigoted that rooting for your country in the Olympics right?

By the way, I can't resist. You in one post in this thread indicate that Chryslers are junk and as proof you point to low resale values of old minivans then 2 pages later say that the truck you wanted (10 year old Dodge) was too expensive. Incongruous.

NOTICE: HERE IS WHERE I ADMIT FAULT!

Yes. I was wrong. I was in a hurry to be late for work and I typed something that had I paused a minute longer I would have realized was absolutely incorrect.

Go back to NHTSA's website and do another search. Plymouth Neon = 11 recalls, Dodge Neon = 13 recalls, 24 in total. When I added the 2 recalls for Civic SI it brought the total up to 23.

Jap owned eh? Shows where your bias is coming from. The fact that Civics are made here as well as Japan and Canada shows that perhaps it's the workers, and not where the money ends up that is the real quality problem. The Subaru Impreza has only had 11 recalls total in its 13 year production run, all of them made in Gunma, Japan. I have to go to dinner now, but I'll post more later.

Ok, later is here and I don't really have much to add. I don't care where the money goes, either to a foreign corporation or to some rich guy in Detroit. Yes, the quality gap between US vehicles and Japanese brands has shrunk drastically. You could point right back at the fact that there are more and more Japanese manufacturers building plants here in the US, sourcing more and more US parts. Maybe it's not that the US manufacturers are getting that much better, but rather that the bar is being lowered. Why would the Japanese manufacturers build plants here? Perhaps it's because our government puts high taxes on vehicles imported from overseas in order to coerce the foreigners to move assembly lines here and employ more of our fantastic union employees. What do you want to bet that the unions had something to do with the tariffs. Way to go UAW - don't expect more from the workers, force the competition to switch to union labor and ratchet those standards back down.
You might be able to tell I'm not a fan of unions. They served their purpose once upon a time, but now I think they force employers to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Horatio says: "Instead of comparing neon to civic I had to bring the Breeze into it? HA. Don't you know it's the same car?"

No, sorry I wasnt aware of that, funny since I was a mech at a dodge truck chrysler/plymouth dealer and I dont see the similarity... lets see, not the same size, not the same motor, not the same letter designation, nothing from the 2 cars is really compatible, just dont see it... You better call the parts guys at the dealership and tell them that they are the same, they sure have a lot of parts for the Breeze, Stratus and Cirrus(which ARE all the same car) that should be fitting on the Neons and your the only one that can explain how they fit(or should) especially since the mechanics sure cant get them to work.

Only thing I can figure is that YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT! Have you ever even seen, been in or driven a Breeze/Stratus/Cirrus?

By the way, doesnt matter what you say, I took my comparison recall figures directly from the nhtsa website also, and they were all correct, so from '96 to '05 there was a 13 vs. 23 difference in favor of the neon over the civic, each the cheapest car in the lines. Neon won out over Civic by 10 recalls less, but yet you still argue that the jap owned but made here civic is better? Then when you actually got your figures you lumped all of the models and brands together, talking about a twist of reality. Multiply the recall figures your comparing for honda and acura by 10 times at least to make up for the number of autos produced by Chrysler corp vs. Honda motors to get a real world figure.

From what I gather about what your saying, you also feel that the mexicans and canadians dont build quality either, dude, your gonna have one helluva time buying your next new vehicle trying not to get a car that has parts from or is built in the USA, Mexico or Canada and that goes for all of the domestically made foriegn brands too.

All I can say is WOW...

Number 1 selling truck in the country what, 28 years running now? I bet there are more broken down fords than there are dodges sold in total. Which is yet another reason I bought a Dodge. [&:]

Don't know if it's still true, but a few years ago the #1 vehicle of choice for millionaires was a 2 year old F-150.

Wouldn't be my choice, but obviously their marketing works on people with more money than me.

Before I purchased my Ram Hemi I was actually in the market for a Ford or Nissan I test drove both trucks. I think the Ford had the 5.4 triton engine and the Nissan had the 5.6. during the test drive a very loud Ram Hemi blew past me. Lucky for me there was a Dodge dealer next door. That same night I test drove the Ram and hands down it was a better truck all around. I drove it home that same night. Fastforward 9 months later I had installed Flowmaster 40 series, cold air intake, and Hypertech. I'm not sure on how much more power I gained but it sure moves out.
