Default confused (oil level)

So I changed the oil last night in the Hemi...

Got the Mopar filter, and 7 quarts (like the manual says) of mobil 1 synthetic.

I drained it, changed the filter....filled it up and I'm pretty far above the crosshatching on the dipstick for the target oil level...

I mean I understand that some oil stays on the internals of the engine but enough to put me a a couple inches above the full line???

Am I missing something?

If it's really over filled what are the possible things that could do? (I haven't started it yet)

Did you prefill the filter? That's a half a quart right there. Were you on an incline when you drained it? If you're leaning the wrong way, it might not have drained all the oil out (always point the nose uphill).

Try running the engine for a few minutes, then waiting 5 minutes and then check the level. If it still reads really high you may want to drain some of the oil out or get a pump and pump it out from the fill hole if possible. My truck is a v6 and it's supposed to take 5 qts. but only takes like 4 1/4, and according to others w/ the v6 it should take 4 3/4 qts. In my case I suspect carbon/sludge buildup from the previous owners poor maintenance.

yeah the nose was slightly higher than the rear...

I guess I'll drain a little bit...I really didn't wanna get covered in oil AGAIN but I don't think that there's a tidy way of putting the plug back in while it's draining!

same issue with mine. it'll find places to go. check it after you put a few miles on the truck you should be ok without draining any of it

mine usually takes about 6.5 quarts, then i start it and let it run the oil through, checking it. it will slowly run down as the oil fills the filter, then i add the other 1/2 quart and shes good to go.
in your siduation i would just say start it up and it will fill the filter

Always start the truck, let oil pressure build, and then turn off, and check.

Mine is always high when I first fill it. After running it a little bit it always gets to where it needs to be.
