Cold air intake experience
you really get 15 at the rear wheel from doing an e fan upgrade wow i thought it was only about 7 that is a nice little jump might have to move it up on the mod list and is there a DIY for the e-fan mod and sorry for thread jacking but it is already headed in that direction
Throttle body spacers have shown NO mpg gains in any tests that I've ever seen conducted. Dozens of dyno tests I have seen have shown NO low end torque gains and many show a loss of HP in the mid to high end of the rpm range. In early throttle body designs, they had their place as the swirling effect of the air would produce a slightly better A/F mixture, but in the modern pressurized throttle body/EFI designs they DO NOTHING!
90% of the people who have bought them remove them due to the annoying whistling noise they produce. Post after Post on forum after forum refers to these things as "paperweights".
I find this response by an Air Raid engineer comical as he replied to a customer who saw NO increases either at the track or on a dyno and a decrease in fuel economy after the installation of both an Air Raid intake and throttle body spacer:

Dear Sir, thank you for your inquiry in our products. The spacer makes no HP on the Dyno. If you haven't noticed any power on the Dyno or the track then it's doing what it's supposed to. You would not see any gains down the 1/4 mile or increases on the Dyno. The idea of the spacer is to improve overall drivability. In most cases when people install a bolt on part they expect better mileage and power, what happens is they are into the throttle a lot more than before trying to test performance and that's when the decrease in mileage happens.
Sincerely,
<Airaid Technician>
"If you haven't noticed any power on the Dyno or the track then it's doing what it's supposed to" NOW THAT'S CLASSIC RIGHT THERE - ROFL...
A lot of people see a mpg gain with ANY mod they install for fuel economy purposes, but it's proven that most people drive more conservatively, without even realizing it, for the first tank of gas or two. Then over time they see the gains disappear and wonder WTF???

Well put. I saw no gains from my Airaid MIT, but it looks cool. The K&N drop in filter will last forever, so it will save money over the years.
Diablosport Predator = very noticable gains.
Magnaflow cat-back = minor gains, sounds great.

For me the most noticable improvements came from making the truck operate more efficiently, not necessarily from doing MPG mods.
Superchips - Noticable gain in mpg over stock programming
Diablo Predator - Much more noticable gains in MPG over the Superchips
Borla CatBack - slight increase not much though
Borla XR-1 Muffler Dumped - ???? Haven't had it on long enough
Open Cutout - Decrease in mpg
AFE Intake (in combination with the catback) - Noticable gain over just the catback
Street tires - Slight gain over the stock tires
Tonneau cover - Slight gain in city mpg, noticable gain in highway mpg 65mph and above
4.56 gears - Noticable gain in both city/highway mpg
APS Converter - Noticable gain in city/highway mpg
Yep, I agree, the more efficiently you get make power and most importantly, get that power to the wheels, the less throttle you need to give it at given speed.
I've often noted that an underpowered vehicle is less fuel efficient than an overpowered one. I think I've posted this before, but when I was assigned a company vehicle in the mid '90s, it was a 4x2 Furd Ranger pickup, with an aluminum cap. Was always well maintained and had relatively low mileage when I got it. Was a four speed manual transmission with the 2.3L four cylinder engine. Everything points to a fuel sipper, right? WRONG!!! The thing averaged about 11 mpg in combination driving and got around 15 on the interstates. WORSE mileage than I currently get outta my 7000# lifted, 4 wheel drive Hemi V8 truck!!!

On an 03 Hemi shortbed I am running a Spectre CAI off ebay that I modifed with a pvc elbow and short length of 3" tubing added up near headlight to put the filter near the front tire area but protected by inner fender. This replaced the KN drop in filter used in stock configuration. Bought the truck with 113,000 miles and overhead console consistently showed 12.9 mpg. I replaced spark plugs, pcv valve. synthetic gear fluid front and rear and the CAI. Also replaced the flowmaster dumped before rear axle with a more free flowing turbo (pypes racepro) still dumped before axle and recently averaged 17.7 mpg computed manually with 85% freeway and 15% city. I am pleased with this setup. Will switch to synthetic motor oil next change.
Although there was this one feeble minded old goat who tried to use an array of nuts, bolts and screws to mount it directly to the radiator instead of the shroud who called me one night out of frustration. I won't mention any names...
As far as going the used Taurus fan route to save some $, 'Teach did an excellent DIY, it's in the FAQ section...

Do not waste your money on a throttle spacer. It will do nothing to inprove your horsepower or gas mileage. I will send you mine for free as I got suckered into it two years ago. Brand new and never used except to collect dust in my garage. I installed exhaust headers, high-flow catalytic converters, and Magnaflow cat-back (amoung other things) and my MPG went up marginally. 1 to 2 MPG better at best....
