89 is the gas to run when I run 87 I get 1.5 mpgs less and you can just tell it runs better and i would say shell is the best gas always seems to run very clean

 

ok this ram is my first truck ever i have never owned a vehicle before this so dont judge.....i have an 08 dodge ram with a 5.7 i have been putting in 87 octane(only two times!!! i have had it for two weeks) how do i get 89?? do i just pump it right in with an empty tank or do i have to go to the dealer and let them do something to it????

 

I also use Shell but eevn though we have a few of them around town, only ONE does no ethanol and it is on the other side of town. So when I am over there I get mine.

 

Only because it has the most additives in the gas. personally....i don't want any additives if I can help it. i want to be the one putting additives in.

If you can get 100% gasoline you can get away with running 87oct. if you have 10% ethanol blend, i would run 89oct. Gas breaks down much faster with ethanol mixed in.(from what I've heard)

These engines have a very diff. designed piston/ring design that is used in racing designs. they are not made for ANY detonation. Running cheap gas is going to allow detonation to occur. Just because you don't notice a diff. doesn't mean damage is not occuring. i will never run anything less than 89 in my tank.

 

you don't have to do anything but start putting 89 octane in it.

EVERY person who I've ever heard of having a cylinder go out on them has been using 87 octane on a regular basis...

 

There is no station that offers 100% gasoline... They are all mixed at the tank farms before being shipped to the actual stations. All stations share the same tank farm/filling stations as it all comes through the same pipeline meaning it's all the same gas. It's what the company adds to it themselves that makes it there own.

 

Not true. here in the US, there are gas stations that are 100% gaslonie and one's with 10% ethanol blend. There was a law passed like 2 years ago that allowed the "middle man" to purchase directly from the supplier to help with the fuel costs which enables gas stations to have 100% gasoline. Also, it is suppose to be marked on the pump if it's got a mix in it.
Now, that's not to say what they call 100% because ther is obviously going to be some sort of "foreign" liquid mixed in with the gas whether it's fuel stabilizer or water...etc....
The ratio of 10% ethanol to 100% gasoline here in upstate NY is like 20:1 with more being mixed.
I was just in the USVI last week and it was all 100% gasoline down there. just depends where you go.

 

Shell has good quality 91 octane fuel but **** she burns fast compared to other 91 octane fuels at the gas stations

 

Because as i already stated....Shell has the most stuff mixed into their gasoline. By stuff i mean fuel injector cleaners and fuel stabilizers. Neither one do i want in my gas. using Shell for the life of the vehicle I can almost forsee dried up seals through out the fuel lines including injector o-rings. that is why I will never use stabilizer nor any other injector cleaner other than Lucas in my truck.

 

could running 91 octane in ur truck on a daily basis cause any damage?
