Default Custom Air Intake

I have been told that I could make a custom air intake for cheap and it would do just about as good as a premade K&N or Airaid, but what would I need to do it? I haven't had a chance to look at my truck yet. It's sadly in the shop right now getting a new radiator and the throttle cable replaced. Help me out guys give me ideas or suggestions.

Check out searches for "Homemade CAI"....

That should turn up some threads with pics. You can get some PVC from Home Depot and fab up one yourself. I did one and put a K&N filter on the end of it. It's not too hard at all, just take some time and be creative.

With the intakes I have seen online, there is usally some kind of guard that goes around the filter. I'm guessing that is to block heat from the intake. I may be wrong about that, if I'm right wouldn't that mean it would draw in hot air and actually decrease economy and power?

not hot.....it is drawing in air lower than the stock airbox and the jet stream scoop directs fresh air right to it.....I have checked it repeatedly after driving and it is never hot.

I looked around and found that SMKNRAM had made a homestyle Jet Stream for 5 bucks out of aluminum. I think I'm gonna try that before I pay 50 bucks, I am a serious cheapo DIYer. I am worried though, I read that I shouldn't be worried about the water being an issue with a jet stream but what about the car wash should I be real careful not to spray the grill there?

you shouldnt really ever worry about heat i am going to make a dual cone short ram are intake that is pretty much a T with 2 cone filters and I will make a slight heat shield to put underneath the filters and be set

Ok well since I now have my truck back I figured I'd show ya what I'm up against. I don't have a clue how to mount this to my throttle body, in fact I think I might end up keeping some stuff and just getting rid of the airbox. For instance run a pvc from the flex hose to a 90 and then the filter?

I also had the idea (tell me if its a bad one) to run some flex air intake hose from O'Reilly's from the fog lamp holes up to where my new intake is going to be? I'm scared about water, I like to have some fun in the mud and water occasionally so I don't know.
