Default 5.9 Fuel Economy question ??

Forgive me if this has been gone over before, but this is only my second day on here and have only had the truck for less then a week. Anyway, my truck is getting about 12.5-13 mpg average according to the overhead console. Are these overhead consoles accurate??? Is this about what all the 5.9's get for mpg. I drive 70 miles round trip a day, 95 % is highway & interstate. Are there any little things I can do to increase it slightly, be sides drive the speed limit? I know I can't gain 5 mpg, but I would be happy for 2 if possible. Any info would help. THanks.

I have the same problem, how many miles do you have on your truck? I don't have the cash to buy a tonneau cover so I just took the tailgate off to see what that does. I have a 2002 with close to 70k miles on it just did a tune up with new filter, wires, plugs, cap and coil so I'm hoping that and the tail gate might help a little. Other then that nothing much is going to help the 5.9 is a two fisted drinker.

That is the range that most people are getting. The best way to get better milage is to stay out of the gas. The milage will get better as the motor breaks in and loosens up a little. Until then enjoy the new car smell.

Mine has only 18,660 miles on it. It is like new. Do you have any pics of yours with the BFG's? Does it ride nice with them? I had them on my last truck (ranger) and they rode pretty nice. My stock tires now are like new and the ride is super smooth. I know they suck in snow though because they came stock on my ranger. I'm sure I'll eventually go to the BFG's.

Nope I don't have a pic I'll try to post one tonight. No the ride isn't all that great in fact my wife hates it, so I kinda enjoy it more. They doesn't make any highway noise, but the guy I bought the truck from didn't rotate them as much as he should have so they are a little choppy. They look kick azz though and they are about the same price as the 20" tires. Do you have 20s or 17s? Sorry, but I didn't read that you already had a tonneau cover, the best thing you can do about gas mileage is stay on the bike. Nice ride by the way!

Welcome! We have some things in common... I was also driving a Ranger ('96 supercab xlt 4.0 5speed 2wd) up until last week when I bought my 2002 Ram Quad Cab 4wd 5.9 .. my Ranger got an overall average of 15mpg... the Dodge gets about 12.5-13mpg according to the overhead. I took a road trip this past weekend and did my own calculation of the mileage and for a 280 mile fwy trip, I got 14.3mpg, but the overhead console showed 13.7... so there was a discrepancy. and that was with me going as easy on the gas as I possibly could. I'm probably going to get a tonneau,.. if nothing else, a vinyl one for less than $300 just to help with the mpg. I've heard it is not unusual for that to add up to 2mpg... the tailgate down - that's a myth that has been disproved by automotive engineers. it can actually HURT your mpg!!

Thanks for the info. I've got the leather tonneau cover. Well, I'm going through this tank now and going to see what I get. Thanks again.
