Unhappy Chrome Clad Wheels

has anyone taken off the chrome clad on the wheels. if so what is behind it, looks like just black wheels. im wanting to go to black on the whels but i suck at painting. ive looked through the threads and found the ones for painting but none on removing the plastic chrome cladding.

any info would help.

ive never heard of anyone removing it. you could do like i did and use bed liner on them. i suck at painting too but mine turned out great

did you have to sand yours before you painted.

I havent ever seen what the actual aluminum wheel under the skin but this articlae will explain to you about the chrome clads. I dont think that you can easily remove the plastic chrome skin seeing that its epoxied to the actual wheel. And even if you did waste your time in removing it, you would find that your left with a raw wheel with a rough surface and an intentional lack of style or detail. I imagine that your spare tire rim is probly better looking.

What year wheel are you referring too? 17" or 20"
My 20's have a nice looking finish around the lip, but not sure how they look under the chrome cladding.

sanded them really good and then cleaned them with prep-all
