Default Used the truck as a truck today (PICS of course)

Well winter's coming so we had to get some wood for the woodstove today. We usually pull the trailer with my old man's Toyota, but since he is always making fun of my truck (he's jealous) i figured I'd give it a chance to prove itself. And it is kind of a tight fit with 3 people and 2 dogs in his little yota, and he doesnt have the fancy trailer plug in so the trailer wouldnt have lights or brakes.
Anywho... the truck did excellent, and we had the trailer loaded pretty dam good the last two trips... its a heavy duty carhauler, and it was sacked out pretty good.
Well, i know most of you could care less about all of this, so I took some pics to keep ya'll interested.

Good looking truck, not sure what kind of Yoda your Dad drives that would compare to the Hemi Quad. That's a tough combo to beat.

Hopefully you've got some seasoned wood there? 2 cord of green wood is too much for a 1/2ton to pull. Although you wouldn't be burning green wood now would ya...lol
2 cord of seasoned wood still weighs a pretty penny. ~5,000lbs.
That's tough loading and unloading by hand. I borrow the old mans dump trailer for that since it's really half mine.

How far did you travel? You'd get pulled over here in NY with an open load like that.

theres about 4+ cord in that load, and yes we loaded and unloaded it all by hand. and most of it was pretty green... the guy we usually get it from had a heart attack last winter, so he was way behind on his cutting/splitting and the wood didnt have much time to dry. so... we got some nice wet wood which means we are gunna have a cold winter.
Dirty- are u sure 2 chord weighs 5000lbs? that seems a little heavy...

the truck didnt skip a beat... i could feel it back there but it was nothing major. i was most worried about the trailer, she was sacked out pretty good and one of the tires has a plug in it so i was worried it would blow...
we only had to go about 15 miles and never went over 40mph loaded... and here in WI most people dont think twice about a way overloaded trailer of wood in the fall

edit: we go by "face cord" which is only 18" wide by 8 feet long... (which would be a lot lighter than a cord)

ahh, I miss the years I grew up in the Catskills. I had an old Jeep J10 pickup would haul a trailer about that size plus the bed full after we spent a day cutting and splitting. Hell it'd ALL be green and would go to the house to season till next winter.
That old Jeep would creak and groan, but never had a problem hauling that much...

At those measurements, that would equal 2.5 face cord for 1 full cord. 4x4x8 which is 128cu/ft
To get 4 cord, you would need to have a trailer that is 20ftx6ft and stacked 4ft high.

What size is that trailer? 16x6 or is it an 18footer?
You've got 2ft high sides it looks like and the wood in mounded in the middle which would even out to about 3ft high all level out if the walls were high enough.
So 16ft X 6ft x 3ft = 288cu/ft which is 2.25cords. Even at 18ft long that would only be 2.5cords. Full cords not faces.
1 cord of Green wood. Say of oak, weighs ~5,000lbs. 1 cord of apple is 4800lbs green. Most good hardwood weighs 5,000lbs green and ~3,000lbs dry. At 2.25cord, you've got 10,000lbs of wood on that trailer. Then the weight of the trailer itself is like 2500lbs....12.5klbs is a bit much for the 1500 tranny. Luckily you weren't going very far.
1 full cord is

Ohh, here's a SITE to check out. It may help with finding better wood.

ok 'dog, i believe you now

the wood was red oak and i think the trailer was 16'? (its my uncles)

I had no idea there was that much weight back there... my old man didnt believe me when i told him so i showed him your calculations and he was surprised too.

im just glad it's done and nothin broke

Dirtydog- a little off topic, but what kind of engineering are you going into?
