Default 2004 Ram 1500 Cruise Control Stopped Working

Thank you, this is my first thread here.

I bought a used 04 1500 with 86k. Had it since End Aug this year.

Just today, on the highway, the cruise control wouldn't take. Light came on, but wouldn't hold the set.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Thanks!

It should be throwing a code, try checking there to start. I had this problem a while back on my 05' where the cruise would not engauge for anything, it also started stalling out on me as well. The fix, check the sensor that plugs in ontop of the rear diff, also check your ABS sensors. On mine, for one reason or another, it was 100% fine after I got my brakes changed. Im guessing either one of the plugs came loose or there was a sensor that was either dirty or getting over heated. Whatever the case though after getting the brakes changed I never had the problem again.

My 04 Ram developed the same problem at, around 48,000 miles and it was a defective Power Train Control Module. (The vehicle's computer, in other words) Fortunately, this was while the truck was still within the 7-70 warranty period and being a component of the power train, it was replaced under that warranty. If you could get the module re-flashed, it might bring that portion back to life, however mine had to be replaced. As far as I could determine, this module is the only component of the cruise control other than the control buttons on the steering wheel.

Interesting, I know mine is doing the same thing right now. The indicator light will come on and I might be able to set it but a split second later it will kick out. Eventually the indicator light will not come on.

This only happened once, yesterday morning on the way into work.

On the way home, it worked.

Thats how mine started, it would do it once here once there then got progressively worse as time went on. It will throw a code though when the cruise control stops working so next time it stops check for codes.

Did your CEL ever come and thats why you checked for codes or you just scanned to check anyway?

No CEL came on with mine but the truck was acting really weird. It started with the cruise control not working so I checked it when I got home that day and there was a code, I was hoping it was just a fluke so I cleared it and kept driving. It would be fine for a day or so then the cruise would not work again, same code soon after that the truck start idling real low and then would stall out. Still no CEL, no cruise control, with the same code again.

p2161 was the code that kept popping up while all of my problems were going on. Changed the brakes and cleaned everything up and the code has not come back since.
