Default major power adder to an 03 04 hemi pickup

If i wanted to install an aftermarket camshaft would i need a new top end kit to compensate the cam as far as heads, new valves, rods, lifters? Or can I just slap it in, tune and go...? Because i know when ive rebuilt some of my old motors and used power adders, ive had to make improvements like new heads, rods, lifters, vavles...etc, what do you think?

Depends on how big you wanna go. There are several cams that only need the 6.1 exhaust springs and push rods and thats all. Some guys but more expensive components. I am buying a cam soon (gotta figure out which one again) but will do just the OEM 6.1 springs and rods. Im not trying to race my big baby. She weighs too much.

well its probably going to be a street truck for the most part, but i would like to take it to the track once in a while... i figure swapping out the old and in with the new cam will require more motor improvements as well as more money if i wanna go the street/ strip route. but it also will be my daily driver so i dont wanna get to crazy...

Not really, there are a lot of cams that dont need new heads to run. The one I am getting requires 6.1 springs/rods and a custom tune to run since its a bit more aggressive. But there are others that will just run off of a canned tune and not require anything else and those are more mild cams. It just depends on how much you want to spend on it. Eventually I will get new heads but I cant afford to dump about 2 grand for just the heads. Maybe in another year or so...

Teach has an address of a place to get the 6.1 springs cheap.

Any larger cam will require matching valve springs. Usually a custom tune will help get the most out of the cam as well. Something like a CompCams 260 is a nice mild cam.
