You'll find many opinions about the type/color of RTV. My Power Wagon has gaskets, but on my Jeep, I've always had great, leak-free results with the Mopar gray gear lube RTV from the stealership. It's made specifically for diffs, and can be applied on top of old gear lube if you don't get it all cleaned off.

Exactly why I hate RTV - a little film of oil will wash off RTV or keep it from sticking.
With Form-A-Gasket, wipe the surface, squeeze on a bead and bolt things back together.
