You don't need to swap TCM's, talk to your buddy who's getting you Mopar gears for nuthin' about hooking up the old Star Scan and flashing your existing TCM, takes 10 minutes, if that.

As for the gears, no, it's not an install you should attempt yourself, most mechanics sub out gear installs to axle shops.

And make sure you get master install kits with those gears!!!

thought that I had read somewhere on here that you can change the 45RFE trans into the 545RFE trans just by getting the TCM that comes on a vehicle with the 545.
It just needs reflashed. On the jeep board many guys with the WJ's and the 4.7 had it done. Some loved it and some hated it. Some dealers will flash it for free even. But we all know how dealers can be.

Well the guy gettin the gears isnt a mechanic. So he cant re-flash the TCM for me. What exactly is re-flashing the TCM? I have seen the term, however have no clue what it is....

Its them basically reprogramming the TCM to use the final drive. Its nothing harmful or anything. It just requires the Star Scan.

Its basically re-programming the TCM, same way they do the PCM when there are periodic fixes and updates.

As stated, some dealers will flash your TCM for free, others may charge up to an hour labor (even though its a 10 min. process).
Easier and unless you yank the right TCM out of a junker somewhere, the flash is cheaper then a complete TCM swap...

I would not go pull a junker either way. Two reasons that come to mind, 1)It could be bad or not work and 2)It may not have been flashed.

I'd just head to the dealer and ask em. Be nice and get a free flash and a cup of coffee while you wait.
