Default Some lift and rim questions/2004 ram qc

So, I switch from Ford over to Dodge. I love my 04 Ram so far. It's 2wd and I've always had lifts on my trucks. My question is I want the Rough Country 6" lift. I have figured out that I think I want to run 315/70/17's as far as tires go. The stock rims are 17 x 8 and from what I've seen have 4.5" of backspacing. The kit is telling me that I will need an aftermarket rim with at least 4.5" of backspacing. Does anyone know why I would need an aftermarket rim if the factory one already has 4.5" of backspace? I have run 12.5" tires on an 8" rim before and I know the tires sucks in, but it can be done. I'm trying to save some money to re-gear the rear end. I don't do much off roading but I love the look of a lifted truck. Also, does anyone know if the Rough Country 6" lift for the 2wd truck is a good system? If anyone has any suggestions or pics of this system on their truck I'd love to see and hear how they like it.

Welcome to DF!

I can't speak to the Rough Country lift, but I just put 295/70/17 Terra Grapplers on my 2005 2wd with a 2.5" level. They fit the rims fine and I'm sure I could have squeezed a little larger tire on there. But the tire barely clears the upper control arm where the ball joint connects. You can see a picture of the clearance I have at: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...-question.html

I'm pretty sure if I had gone with anything wider the tire would have rubbed. It still makes me a little nervous like it is today.

To my knowledge, no factory Dodge wheel has 4.5" of backspacing. You may want to double check your specs.

12.5" on an 8" wheel is NOT to spec, but a lot of guys do it. On a 4x2 I don't think it's the problem it can be on a 4x4 as you'd probably not venture where you'd have to air down the tire to get through. Other than extreme hard turning, low air is the main reason a tire will pop the seal when it's too wide for the rim...

Thanks, guys for all your help. I was wanting to ask a guy on here how he did it. It looks like he has the 6" rough country lift with the same factory rims I have on mine. I have to wait and see if he will message me back.

Yeah, I have the 305/70/17 on my factory 17's . I love the lift, only problem is the local weather is starting to get some surface rust on the underbelly of the beast. Me and creative off road both have the RC 6 inch lift. GL on the lift man.
