To start this is my friends 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.7L Hemi, automatic, ex-cab short bed. It has about 60,000 miles on it. The other day he went to pull someone out and his front wheels wouldnt engage and when he went to disengage to 2wd it now grinds.

The truck will not lock the front wheels in in 4hi or 4lo.
The truck grinds when in 2wd.
The truck does not grind in 4hi unless the rear wheels spin (i.e flooring it in the grass)

Driving the truck in 4hi it doesn't grind. It only grinds in 2wd. When in either 4hi or 4lo, the front wheels will not engage.

The transfercase fluid is pink and was only a half quart low.

This problem didnt exit until 2 days ago when he tried to pull someone out and couldnt get the 4wd to engage.

We have codes P0700 and P0841.

Any ideas guys? I'm a GM guy so I dont really even know where to begin with your dodge setups.

I suggest you keep doing what you seem to be doing already. Switch it back and forth a few more times from 4HI to 4LO and then try spinning some doughnuts. A few more tries and I bet you can get that grinding to go away.

 

Hmm so does this site have any technical help? Or can you atleast point me to a schematic of the 243 transfercase, and front differential as well as hub assembly?

 

So looks like we need a new half shaft and axle shaft. Where abouts can i get one of these? Ebay doesnt seem to have any nor do any online parts stores. I can only find the half shaft.
