Default What happens if CATS are removed?

Ok tech guys...I have only saw threads about headers, cat back systems, remove muffler leave resontor and low flow converters. Has anyone removed their converters and then reinstalled a pipe with fitting to reinstall the O2 sensors? I would think this woud be a great improvement in conjunction with low flow exhaust. I know some states have emmisions testing but those that don't could remove converters.

Any thoughts?

I have two Hemi rams, both 2x4, both same gears. One totally stock, one with the header/ free flow cats and slowmaster on it and intake. There is very little difference in the way they run. Less than .5 secs. For the extra 1400.00 installed.. was it worth it??? Not really.

well i hear this argument alot that hemis dont benefit nearly as much as the 4.7s when it comes to mods...i already feel a little more pick up with my intake and exhaust...so if its for a hemi, i guess its not worth it unless ur boltin on a turbo, then youll need some highflow exhaust. other then that, id blow your money else where, appearance[sm=exactly.gif]

Ross944, I gutted the cat on my mazda rx some time ago, and the exhaust sounded really tinny (?)--- just pull the cat and install a pipe for now, see if you like it first. If you find you don't, the cat can always be re-installed, and for a lot less money. I eventually ended up putting a full header and tuned exhaust on the RX just because it ran much better and sounded way better!!!!!!!

First off you would be breaking a Federal law by tampering with an emission control device. Second you be be dumping more carcinogens in the air for all of us to breathe.
Really though, not much gain for a street driven vehicle.

I agree with your responses ...to spend $1400 on exhaust for a truck is insane and I really don't think pullin the cats will make much difference on a street truck. My thoughts are to pull the muffler and run through the resonator only just to get a little more sound.

thanks for your feed back

i think ill buy a stock one off ebay or somethin and gut that, then see what it will sound like? im hoping that tinny sound was just due to the motor size. my friend did it on his v8 and it gave a deeper tone, but thats a sports car with a ls1 5.7....so who knows. but i think ill do that incase i dont like it and so that if anyone looks under there it still looks legal.

I wouldn't screw with the cats period....besides....they carry an 8/80 federal emissions warranty which comes in really handy about 60k or so. Thats what we've been seeing on the 4.7/5.7 rams. They're coming in with the cats rattling like a set of bells.

I run an o/r pipe (no cats) on my '01 Mustang and it made all the difference in the world. Granted, it is a true dual exhaust. But if loud is what you're looking for, just buy a 40 series 1 chamber flowmaster and dump it. It will rattle the neighborhood windows.
