Is your rear window "wrap" thing "I don't know what to call it either" on the inside or outside of the rear window? If it's on the outside you won't have to remove it just you can't cut it on the outside or if you do you will have to be very careful. If it's on the inside you can't apply the tint over it unless you want it to turn out super crappy. Why do you want it tinted if you have a wrap anyway?

As for the tinting part I've tried it a few times and it's very hard to get good edges and keep the gap minimal and have no light gaps. It's also super hard to get the windows super clean so you don't get any contamination spots. I'm as big of a fan as anyone of DIY stuff however tinting is one thing like painting that I think unless you have a lot of experience or don't care how it turns out you should probably just take it to a pro. I've also found their are a lot of hacks out there that call themselves pro's. This is one industry I wouldn't go by the price I'd go by the quality of that tinter. Cheaper might not always be better but then again it might be just depends on who is doing it. I was lucky enough to find a great tinter after dealing with 2 that weren't so great.

If you go to a shop you can also find one that has a quality film like Llumar or Suntek or one of the other brands that are good. Instead of the Wally World stuff that more than likely is just a cheap dyed film.

As for the 2.5% that will be very dark. Do you have factory tint I'm assuming? I have 5% over factory on my truck. It's very dark seeing out. You can see out during the day but not really at night unless there is a bright light behind you. During the day looking in on the rear sides you can't see in at all even if you come cup your hands up against the window you can hardly see anything. This is due to the tint on the other side. With the front windows untinted you can slightly and I mean slightly see through if you look through just one rear window and a front untinted window. On the rear since the windshield isn't tinted if the sun is hitting the windshield you can still see through. If the sun isn't hitting the windshield it's pretty hard to see through the rear too. 5% over the factory 18% or whatever it is is pretty dark. Meters out to around 2.5%. 2.5% over factory would really be dark. I'd probably like it but no quality company I know of makes a 2.5%. I've thought about putting double layers of 5% on the rear window but then it would be super hard to see out probably even in the day. One the rear sides I wouldn't need it any darker.

The percentages are how much light it lets through. So if you get 2.5% that means it lets 2.5% of light through.

For the guy above suggesting 35% while you can see in it you can clearly and I mean very clearly tell it's tinted with 35% so if no tint is allowed and the cop wants to write tickets for it he can easily tell you have tint. Often guys here get away with it where it's supposed to be 50% allowed however, in a no tint area I'm just not sure you could get away with it.

Frenchy what brand of film do you use when you tint vehicles? Another thing to check into is some local shops will sell it to you. Some at a highly inflated price and some like the local guy I found that's a great tinter sold me some for around what it cost him. He seems like a great guy and is an amazing tinter. I will say though while he is good he knows he is good. Not that it's a bad thing. His prices seem inline or cheaper than the other places around here. Wish I had found and stuck with him from the get go.

It's on the outside. I figured I would start with this stuff and do it myself so if I mess it up it's not a big deal and I'm not out much $$. Then if I get it and I like it this spring I'll upgrade and do it again with the real good stuff.

Trust me, I didn't say you can't tell it. But it's a LOT lighter than 20% and 5%.

The 2.5% from black magic/gila/whatever cheap brand you go with, is actually about a 10% overall. Like hometheaterman stated, it's a dyed film, in which they use a color, generally blue, but in the black magic case, red, to achieve the darkness.

The 5% that I linked you to, is a true smoke color, it has NO blue-ish or red-ish hue to it.

Now, I'm not saying doing the 35% on the fronts will negate you from getting a ticket for film, but it will get you past a lot more cops than 5% or 20% will.

If you're worried about it, just do the film over the back windows, and go to your eye doctor, and see if they can't write you a prescription for tinted windows, in Michigan that allows you to get away with 35% film on the front windows.

Yeah I could do that. I guess first I wanna learn how to do it then move up to the real stuff. And do you think it would look stupid with like that 5% you shot me a link to and then 35% on the fronts?

As for a picture, it's kind of far away, but here's my two vehicles and my dads.

My celica has 50% on the windshield, 20% on the doors, and 5% on the back three windows. My truck has a 6 inch 5% strip on the windshield, 20% on the doors, and the equivalent of .8% on the back windows. My dad's Ram, during this picture, had factory tint on the back, and 50% on the front doors.

Nah, I don't think it would at all. 35% is generally the percentage I use when people tell me that they aren't sure what percentage they want, and just want them a little dark. If they want them really light, then I use the 50%
