Bags of Sand In Truck For Traction?

im running wrangler AT and i love them i hardly every going 4wd been in snow over my bumper and have never gotten stuck... i drive to the UP of michigan alot during the winter to snowmobile and sometimes drive hours on back dirt roads that arent plowed that i can barely fit through and have never had a problem.... learn throttle control and you can almost make it through anything

my hankook dynapro M/T's get damn good traction in the snow up here, no weight in the bed but i do drive in 4 high, hardly ever slide, which can be controlled by proper braking. speaking of which i should probably get my transfer case looked at next summer to make sure she's doing alright, 500 miles a year in 4 wheel drive probably beats the hell out of that trans case.

If you have wrangler hp's you don't stand a chance!!
I had the same issue... well worse... as I got no traction if it was only raining out (wrangler HP with 45K miles) I purchased some cooper zeon ltz (http://www.coopertire.com/html/produ...?page=zeon_ltz) tires installed for about $940... world of difference
the wrangler is really a passenger tire... get a real truck tire and you will only use 4WD when you need to. When I need a new truck, I can tell you right now the first thing I will do is replace the tires (if they come with wrangler HPs)
even the goodyear dealer where I live (peoria, IL) said the wrangler HP is not a good tire and they wind up taking back amost every set they sell. I did the research and found these to be the best value for the price, and the goodyear dealer actually ordered and sold the cooper tires to me cheaper than if I bought them on line and hand them mounted!

I've noticed with mine that it pushes alot. The combo of an LSD, no rear swaybar and a long wheelbase is of culprit. Lots of plowing when going around a sloppy snow covered turn even at 5mph. My short box Silverado was just like your friends WRX. Narrow wheelbase and awesome around turns and with overall control.
Tires play a big part, but there are other factors that your up against as well.
With that said...I have descent tires and still put sand bags in the back. This year I did 300lbs.

I'm totally confused. I have 37x1250 Procomp Extreme Terrain's on my truck, and here in CO-when we had the really, really bad snowstorm and there was about 16" on the ground, and nothing was plowed(including the highways), I was passing -everyone-, I had great traction even in 2WD, as a matter of fact I only used 4x4 when going 85 on the highways(unplowed), just to be sure. I was passing everyone-including HUGE lifted silverado's and gmc's. On the side roads where everyone wasn't going anywhere, I was flying by in the unplowed lanes. I didn't have any weight in the back of the ram. I believe everyone is on to something, the tires you have must not be up to facing snow. My Procomp's only have about 60% tread left and they are great. I can even stop in complete snow on a dime(abs hardly has to kick in).
And yes, I know I'm an *** for flying by everyone-but my GF had a job interview 1.5 hours away, so I had to fly. It was pretty silly though.. Everyone was getting stuck and struggling to move, and I was rollin like it was dry pavement. Yay to dodge ram's.

I use 4wd anytime the ground is slippery and will allow the tires to slip a little. That's what it's there for. I pay for 4wd so I'm gonna use it. Better off using it and not needing it just to be sure than having it and ending up in a ditch because you didn't use it.
I use it more for other people than myslef. i want to be able to drive off the road if i have to so I don't get hit.

Ya what they said^^^ Tires are sooo important. One other caution about the sandbags,my cousin used to put two 90lb tube sand bags in the back of his S-10 for traction, one day he took off from a stop sign and the sand bags had gotten wet and the froze solid, they were like two missles! They blew his tailgate off! he was draggining it by one cable until he came to a stop. This was a new truck with a nice tight shutting tailgate.
