40 mph noise
Hey ya'll,
This is my first time here. My 04 1500 4x4 hemi has recently developed a noise. This noise only is audible while driving in the 40 mph range. I don't know if it's because of the 18* weather or if it was because I had to drop it into 4 low to drive the trailer over the bricks that were frozen to the ground. I find this noise to be audible only when the engine is connected to the drive train, when accelerating, or coasting at the 40 mph range. If you take your foot off the gas while it is making the noise, it will go away. Therefore it eliminates tire noise, even though it sounds like it. 4 wheel drive does not stop it, tow or regular mode does not stop it. I really do not have a clue what it going on.
I have included a video that shows exactly what it is doing.

Thanks in advance!

I have just changed the transfer case oil, and it was pitch black. I took the truck back out on the street, and it is still making the same noise. Really sounds hydrostatic like in the 40 mph range.
It's hard to hear on the video but it kinda sounds like a rear end whine/whirring. My new gears are doing that from 45-65 b/c I don't think they were set up right. Older sets can do it, could be gears, could be bearings. When was the last time you changed you rear diff. fluid and how many miles are on the truck?
I have about 103xxx miles. I have never changed the rear diff fluid, I've only had the truck for about 5k miles, I don't know what was changed before I bought it, but I know it wasn't abused. What's really weird is that it just started this week. It wasn't gradual, it just started after I had to yank that trailer out.
Yea, you might just be at the point where you drive it until it craps out then have it replaced. Maybe take it to a mechanic so they can tell you if they see anything screwed up when they pull the cover off. If you do end up needing work done make sure the shop is well experienced w/ ring and pinion installs.
My truck was doing something like that a few months ago. Get under the truck and see if you can wiggle the drive shaft. If it moves, your bearings are shot in either the differential or transfer case.
